Osuna > Sanchez No kidding, they'll make him a starter, I hope. This made me feel a bit better... “I’ve known him for quite a while,” Johnson says. “And sometimes we make the decision for him, even if he says he feels good. We’ll just say he has the day off. He may not like it but that’s the way it goes, because we’re managing him not only for now but for the future.”
Caper Verified Member Posted August 7, 2015 Posted August 7, 2015 Yeah... His agent will call him, or his family andtell him to stfu, be a starter.
Caper Verified Member Posted August 7, 2015 Posted August 7, 2015 And btw. Every single article on Osuna I read contains this or some variation there of. Osuna tells good stories too, Lowe said. He talks about pitching at 16 in the Mexican League, as did his father and uncle before him. “He hardened his soul there doing that,” said Jays bullpen coach Dane Johnson. 16 pitching at AAA level. Yet every time a pitcher gets promoted too soon in this org, fans get so scared the prospect is going to roll over and die.
Atothe Old-Timey Member Posted August 7, 2015 Posted August 7, 2015 AA better stick to the plan, no chapman path needed
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted August 7, 2015 Posted August 7, 2015 I think everyone's expectations of him are way too high. I mean Aaron Sanchez had a better xFIP as a reliever last year than Osuna does this year. He's really going to have to work on his command within the strikezone to succeed as a starter. Right now he just blows hitters away with the fastball but he isn't going to sit at 95 as a starter.

Walk rates for each in the minors go Sanchez - 4.3, 5.1, 4.2, 5.1 and for Osuna - 3.1, 2.3, 3.3. The sample you're talking about last year was half the amount Osuna has pitched for this year already. And Osuna also has a lower BB/9 and a higher K/9 then Sanchez had last year in relief. I think you have to assume his numbers drop a little. But it's not unreasonable to expect him to be a good #3 next year in the rotation. Edited August 7, 2015 by The Cats Ass
HERPDERP Old-Timey Member Posted August 7, 2015 Posted August 7, 2015 BTW this whole time people have been raving about his fastball/change combination, but look at how his slider ranks: http://www.fangraphs.com/statss.aspx?playerid=13764&position=P#pitchtype
Frenchsoup Verified Member Posted August 7, 2015 Posted August 7, 2015 Osunas mechanics are pretty terrible i don't mind this
dineke Old-Timey Member Posted August 7, 2015 Posted August 7, 2015 This better not be another Chapman situation. Need him as a starter for the future.
RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted August 7, 2015 Posted August 7, 2015 That would be so horrible to have an elite closer for 6-7 years that position hasn't been an issue at all :-0 What we need to do is to convert him into an starter mess around with his mechanics as much as possible and turn it into another Morrow type situation. This will please the people
Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted August 7, 2015 Posted August 7, 2015 This better not be another Chapman situation. Need him as a starter for the future. Yes, god forbid we get the best closer in baseball for the next 5 years.
HERPDERP Old-Timey Member Posted August 7, 2015 Posted August 7, 2015 We're going to need a closer, honestly. Lowe & Hawkins will be gone. Sanchez and Osuna I want in the rotation.
RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted August 7, 2015 Posted August 7, 2015 Yes, god forbid we get the best closer in baseball for the next 5 years. We have a good thing lets ruin it by moving him around Elite closers and late game relievers are not important. Just look at the successful teams in the AL east the last few years. Most of them.used just anybody to close out games and in key situations
0ctobyte Verified Member Posted August 7, 2015 Posted August 7, 2015 Osuna would be worth a lot more as a starter. I hope they at least attempt to convert him.
LTR Verified Member Posted August 7, 2015 Posted August 7, 2015 I think Osuna should throw his slider and change-ups more. Nobody is hitting them. His FB has been his least effective pitch and he throws it 80% of the time.
LTR Verified Member Posted August 7, 2015 Posted August 7, 2015 The fastball sets up every other pitch. Maybe he should use his secondary stuff a touch more...but the FB still has to be the dominant pitch. Yeah, that's what I mean... just a bit more... obviously the FB is the setup pitch.

He generates a ton of whifs on it up in the zone.

o2cui2i Community Moderator Posted August 7, 2015 Posted August 7, 2015 just for thought.... Osuna is a closer right now. His mind has to be locked on that job this year. saying that he doesn't want to be a starter might be part of his mental approach to getting the job done this year. what he really thinks may come out in the off season but for now we want him to have this kind of thinking so that he can be the best closer he can be. I've seen guys in the pen be all whiny and think that they should be starters and have s*** on their own career for not having the right mind set. today, Osuna wants to be a closer... we'll see what comes later. very mature 20 year old kid

o2cui2i Community Moderator Posted August 7, 2015 Posted August 7, 2015 Agreed, it was mentioned above. If Aa comes to him and asks him to be a starter next year there is NO WAY he says "nah man, I like throwing in the pen"
