What's not to like? He's 24, just threw 32 starts in a season with a 3.82 xFIP and looks like at least an average SP going forward.

Because he's young, cheap and was good in 2014! Struck out nearly a batter per inning with above-average swinging strike and chase rates, kept the ball around the plate and made every start without slowing down.

Also, on that last note, his second-half PD stats were elite and the velocity held steady.

I've been driving the Drew Hutchison bandwagon since 2011, he was my avatar for years on the old board.

I even spelled his name properly most of the time.

You were the only one to have him #2 on the first ever BJMB prospects list. Although you dropped him to 5th on the next list, letting Alvarez, Gose and Lawrie leapfrog him.

The minor league scouting reports on Hutch just seem wrong in retrospect. I remember them being:

Low 90's FB with movement (sink)

Average potential slider (needs work)

Plus changeup

And then you see him in the bigs and the FB doesn't have a lot of noticeable sink (doesn't get groundballs either), his slider looks like the better off-speed pitch (definitely plus and definitely his out pitch) and the change doesn't even really seem like an average offering.

I guess when he has above average control and minor leaguers in A/A- are swinging wildly at it then it tends to make s*** scouts buy in.

But you preferred to Straily at that time. AMIRITE?

Hutchison is a great asset. Young, cheap, makeup, pop, secondary stuff and results. He's the underrated guy (Noah, Justin, Aaron, Hendo, Molina, Drabek over him) who make a good job with no big name.

He sorta reminds me of Halliday on the mound, at least during his set and windup. That's always a nice memory there!

Except for the hunchback of Notre Dame thing Hutch has down pat, he's got the trademark on that.

I dont think Jays fans are high enough on Hutchison. You hear Stro, Sanchez, Norris...and further off Osuna and Hoffman, but I feel that Hutchison didn't have a chance to become a top prospect and be recognized by the Baseball America's and BP and Keith Law prospect lists of the world. The Jays were so confident in his makeup and composure, on top of his stuff, that the called him up when he only had 6 starts above A-ball (and only 16 above low A).

Had he not been pushed so aggressively through the organization, and had time to continue to put up high k rates in AA and eventually AAA, he wouldve started shooting up the prospect lists, the Jays fanbase wouldve "pined" for his callup. You dont hear it often, but he can be an #1 guy or 1A, and I look for him to breakout this year.

That's right, I forgot about those lists. I think I threw a Dan Haren comp on him back then (although I wouldn't now).

I remember ranking him as the top pitcher in the system at one point. Loved what he was doing in the minor leagues and what TDott says about him essentially moving up too fast to generate prospect hype is something I've argued a few times myself.

I wouldn't get carried away now. I'll just stick 24 year old mid rotation guy and that is a really good thing.

Are you saying being pushed early and fast before he had the proper time to develop led to his injury? He's another year out from TJS so hopefully he can put it all together this year. He really drove me insane at times last year with his Jekyll/Hyde routine and epic meltdowns but I could really see him turning the corner and being more consistent.

I think everybody's pretty high on him and expect big things. No.1 is a stretch I think but I'd love to see it.

Me personally I'm just looking for a little more consistency with him. He was definitely the most polarizing and enigmatic pitcher on the staff last yr. You truly never knew what you were going to get from him game to game, more so than anybody else. An alternating pattern of 7 innings of the greatest stuff you've ever seen followed by him getting lit up & destroyed the next outing.

He definitely has the tools to be a front of the rotation guy, hopefully he fully capitalizes on his talents this year. I'm excited to see how he'll work together with Martin.

Not saying he was pushed TOO fast, or faster than he was actually ready. Nor was I saying anything about his UCL injury. My point was, in terms of prospect hype, he was pushed faster than others who did spend more time in the minors, allowing the prospect lists to recognize and hype them. I believe, injury or not, If Hutch spent 2012 in AA, 2013 post-TJ and 2014 in AAA, and was a 24 year old prospect on the cusp...he'd be a top 10 or 20 guy on many of these lists going into 2015.

With his stuff I'm sure he would be.
