Oh, he only spent a little bit of time raging at Heyman on Twitter? Oh okay, in that case he's very cool.

Trea Turner is being severely overrated here and everywhere. First off...NC State guy, so there is knock number 1. Secondly he changes his swing every pitch (I'm only half kidding he's had about 10 different stances, and changes his hands all the time) and his bottom half may as well be doing a samba as he swings. Way too many f***ing moving parts for my liking. In the AFL he goes 5 for 5 in a game and changes his stance for the next game. Not to mention he's a butcher at short. Got wheels though, game changing speed. He'll be in Delino Jr. territory in two years. I didn't like him at the draft. Don't like him now.

Sounds like one of those guys that scouts love way more than they should because athleticism. Billy Hamilton, Gose, DJ Davis etc.

80 speed guys are sexy and Turner did his big numbers in a way less offensive league than Hamilton and Deshields big Cal League breakouts. But lets see what happens when Turner (who strikes out quite a bit) doesn't BABIP .470. I still think Delino Jr. is a great comp for him.

I really like the deal for the Rays or at least I should say I like the optics of it. I like that they didn't get too caught up in their previous valuation of Myers. If they feel that going forward he's not really better than Souza than it's good that they didn't fall for the sunk cost fallacy. Hannigan and Rivera are pretty similar players but shaving three years on a 34 year old catcher is pretty significant and could make up for the year of control lost on Myers. It doesn't hurt that Rivera is cheaper. The trade makes sense for the Rays even before you factor in the prospects. I don't understand the urgency to move Souza on the part of the Nats. They had decent pitching deph too so though the trade may look o.k. on paper, it's pretty bad for a win-now team. The Padres just seem like they are re-arranging the deck chairs. They seem eager to change but ultimately directionless under this current management group, not unlike the Colorado Rockies that way. Edited by KingKat

Since Turner can't be dealt until June...does he have to open the season with the Padres system? Or does he just stay in minor league spring training until June?

From what I read, he indeed plays for the Padres until June.

Which will be interesting if he suffers a bad injury between now and then.

I agree. While I don't think anyone badly lost or greatly won this trade when it was first made, and we probably won't know for a long time, I think the Rays have the strongest chance of pulling ahead.

I really don't like the trade from the Nationals perspective. I don't believe in Turner at all. Hated the speculation that the Jays were looking at drafting him, was bloody thankful when they picked Pentecost instead.

With how many B / C prospects that were flung about in this trade though, who knows what it'll look like down the road.

No way I'd want my player playing with another team. Especially one like Turner who is obviously a little obsessive about change.

Turner was in the Midwest League this season. Does anyone know when their season starts? This might be a non-issue.

Well in that case, I suppose the Padres could assign him to one of their short-season clubs as a way of protecting the assett.

Plenty of hitters are late bloomers though. The recent Phillies playoff runs were build in part on Ryan Howard, Chase Utley, Shane Victorino and Jayson Werth, who had their first full ML seasons at ages 26, 26, 25 and 28, respectively. There's nothing wrong with not being established at 25.

Souza's minor league stats are ridiculous and the projections (like Steamer) support him being an average regular or better.

FYI: zips for the Nats was done today. Souza line was done as a tb ray and projected him to be 228/304/396

He technically isn't their player yet, though. Would you have him sit on his ass until June?

This delay seems unecessary.

My take is that I didn't think it was possible for all three teams to lose a 3-way trade until now.

Oh I see.

Gross.

Interesting. Steamer is usually better for rookie batters and MLE than ZiPS, while ZiPs better for middle-aged players.

I can see why you'd cling to that.

What do they have for Myers?
