baconpancakes Verified Member Posted September 29, 2014 Posted September 29, 2014 He is an absolute workhorse, is rarely injured and is the strike thrower every team needs. How many times before Janssens did we curse when we had brought in a closer who couldnt just throw damn strikes? I am sure he will command some coin, but I see no reason to just let him walk. Any interview with him says that the two sides talked about it, didnt seem to work out, so that was that. This is a guy who has averaged 1.04 whip in four years while logging 50 innings a year. He does not give up the HR in this HR happy park. I just dont know what else they are looking for. We don't seem to have a clear set closer waiting in the wings, so why not sign him for 2+ years. At 33 I know he will start to fall apart, but he is not the flamethrower, he throws accurate strikes, I think he could afford to lose some speed and still be effective. For what we got out of him and what we paid, his value has been unreal for the last 3 years, time to pay him what he is worth. I am so sick of the tight purse strings of this team. This is a guy who we couldnt figure out what to do with 5 years ago. I cringed when we used to start games, but he evolved into an excellent end game player. One of my fav Jays of all time. He will be missed. /end rant sorry if this was or similar was posted elsewhere.
NorthOf49 Old-Timey Member Posted September 29, 2014 Posted September 29, 2014 Closers just aren't that important and are very easily replaced. And Janssen is not rarely injured, he gets hurt pretty much every year. "logging 50 innings a year" isn't an accomplishment.

Pretty much i would prefer to have bacon pancakes for breakfast then have Janssen on a 2+ year contract. Edit: Maybe i shouldn't say that since i love bacon pancakes and i would hate Janssen on a 2+ year contract. Edited September 29, 2014 by jays4life19
eastcoastjaysfan Old-Timey Member Posted September 29, 2014 Posted September 29, 2014 Falling velocity, can't strike anyone out anymore. Time to cut and run. Thanks for the memories.
baconpancakes Verified Member Posted September 29, 2014 Author Posted September 29, 2014 he didnt log more than 50 due to no opportunity. It is not like we were in a spot to use him every other night to seal off a game. He could have gone on vacation and we would not have realized it for how consistently we needed a game closer. I agree he wasnt great this year. But one down year in 5 ain't bad at all. He throws strikes and doesnt get lit up. I would have him back. AA said himself at his year end ******** ramble that he doesnt have anyone to close, but he has people who "can" close. I don't feel like going back to the closer by committee experiments, as we never came out on top of that mess. If he continues to ******** that we are on the cusp of greatness, yet lets key pieces just walk away with the hopes of his famous "catching lightning in a bottle" technique, I wish they would just burn this thing down, all of it, and start with AA. "I do think we have some relievers -- and I think there's some guys out there that might not be quote-unquote closers, that if given the opportunity can close," Anthopoulos said. "We're going to look to add relievers, and there may be someone that we add via trade or add through free agency that we announce as the closer. There may be a bunch of guys that we add or sign and say they're going to compete to be the closer, depending on who they are."

eastcoastjaysfan Old-Timey Member Posted September 29, 2014 Posted September 29, 2014 Come on now. There are too many red flags. You know this. Don't let your love for a player blind you to this. Fastball has lost almost 3 MPH over the last two years.. Swinging strike rates are plummeting... Gave up a ton of flyballs this year. He's a ticking time bomb. He got everything he could out of himself. He's not that talented but he carved out a nice career by being able to work quickly and paint the corners. His time is just up. You can only fool hitters for so long with 88-89 & average stuff.

Morrow closer 2015 Hey you only live once. I hear Navarro especially loves a good stack of bacon pancakes on game day mornings. (pretty much every day) a few tips when preparing bacon pancakes. 1. Use real maple syrup 2. Aunt Jemima is the way to go for your mix 3. Use nice thick slices of bacon and cook it medium before pouring the mix in. 4. Excellent after bar snack or weekend breakfast (or every day) Mods, please change thread title to "how to make bacon pancakes"

Key22 Verified Member Posted September 29, 2014 Posted September 29, 2014 I like Casey and I like guys with excellent command and control over flamethrowers who have no idea where the ball is going. But in today's whacko baseball world some team will offer him something like $30/3 and that's kind of hard for a team like the Jays with other more pressing needs. Brett Cecil probably steps in to close and his K numbers look pretty sick. Maybe Delabar finds the command. Ideally you like an established closer if for no other reason to give the players some confidence. I know people grumble about the closer stats and blah blah blah but when a team has a 1 run lead and you turn the game over to Mariano Rivera - it feels a lot better than handing it over to some mediocrity that can only get mediocrities out. The closer is a big deal when you look at single game scenarios like in the playoffs. 7th game up by 1 bases loaded 1 out. You play the percentage you want the guy who is an absolute shut down strikeout machine versus Chris Redmond. But the Jays don't have the money to be worrying about playoff situations - the Jays are now the team with the longest stretch of years without a playoff birth in Major League baseball - so that makes us the worst franchise in baseball because the ONLY thing that matters is the playoffs. The money CJ will cost needs to go elsewhere. To cover the increased salary of Ricky Romero. Too many holes. CF will be worse. BP is worse without CJ. Everyone is going to be another year older (thus worse). DO we have money? Do we have prospects to trade?

That hint of grease and pig just gave it a little extra something something.

NorthOf49 Old-Timey Member Posted September 29, 2014 Posted September 29, 2014 Janssen may not even get 1/6 or 2/10. He's just not very good any more folks.
xposbrad Verified Member Posted September 29, 2014 Posted September 29, 2014 Because if the Jays start trading players before they expire worthless they might actually start winning something, and that's not the goal of this team apparently.
GeorgiaPeach Verified Member Posted September 29, 2014 Posted September 29, 2014 The asset management of this team is horrendous. Janssen should've been gone last year via trade.
