kgm1 Verified Member Posted September 6, 2014 Posted September 6, 2014 Yeah I know about the Smith extension, though do you think San Diego would consider trading him? He's going to be 33, a platoon bad and really doesn't fit into their long term plans. I like Aoki as well. It goes to show you that its not necessary to sign Melky as some people are making it out to be. You can easily replace him with the above suggestions/names we've thrown out at a fraction of the cost. If your platooning in center, at 2nd and at DH you can't platoon in Left. I don't think melky will be back but I see no free agents out there to make us a better team that are going to sign here.
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted September 6, 2014 Posted September 6, 2014 On Roundtable last night they were saying his stats up to 30 years old are similar to Darin Erstad and Mark Kotsay. Both players after 30 their game started to fall off. They also said where Melky is big name outfielder in a thin free agent market some team a player away could spring for 5-75m. Way they talked he is all but done in Toronto I think there is a lot of people on this board who can predict the FA market than guys like Eliotte Friedman Bobcat and Doug Smith. I listened to the same segment and someone brought up Choo making it sound like he could get over 100 million. Stepen Brunt is the only guy on that panel who really knows anything about baseball. The only guys on Sportsnet who are worth listening to about this kind of stuff is Shi and Ben Nicholson-Smith,
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted September 6, 2014 Posted September 6, 2014 Pillar and Gose are going to be the outfield going forward and if that is the OF next spring cue the rebuild. I could see Gose in CF, though they'd have to go out and try to replace Melky if that's the case. They could easily find 2-3 wins in LF rather than signing Melky to a big contract.
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted September 6, 2014 Posted September 6, 2014 Does anyone know what the TV numbers are compared to last year? I can only find the weekend games but that doesn't really give an average. I heard the TV contract was worth 60 million last year but I really don't know how much a viewer is worth in TV ad revenue. The TV numbers will influence Payroll next year so thats why I'm trying to find out.
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted September 6, 2014 Posted September 6, 2014 Exactly. Players like Melky who's value comes purely in his bat tend to get overpaid. You can find 2-3 wins in LF more efficiently. I'm more then happy to take the draft pick and move on. Couldn't have said it better. Get the draft pick, sign a Denorfia, or Aoki and try to sign a Markakis or trade for a Seth Smith and the Jays will be fine with letting Melky walk.

You either sign Denorfia or Aoki and then platoon with them someone like a Markakis or Smith, and you'd be fine. Lind and Valencia as your DH platoon, plus at least Valencia could play other positions like 3B and 1B as well. Then you have Pillar and Pompey down in the minors as insurance. Not the worst situation and it's much cheaper than resigning Melky.
kgm1 Verified Member Posted September 6, 2014 Posted September 6, 2014 So your saying Gose in center, platoon in left and DH, who would you suggest for 2nd or 3rd When I read talk about Valencia at 3rd and an OF of Pillar, Gose and Bautista I start thinking they have already been told the budget is going down
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted September 6, 2014 Posted September 6, 2014 So your saying Gose in center, platoon in left and DH, who would you suggest for 2nd or 3rd I would do everything in my power to try and acquire Ben Zobrist to play second base. If not, then Jed Lowrie, Asdrubal Cabrera, Stephen Drew and Chase Headley are free agents.
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted September 6, 2014 Posted September 6, 2014 When I read talk about Valencia at 3rd and an OF of Pillar, Gose and Bautista I start thinking they have already been told the budget is going down Valencia as a starting third baseman would be a mistake. If AA is serious about that, then they are mismanaging their roster. Valencia is a great bat to platoon with Lind since he could also play 3B, 1B and LF in emergency, so he'd be valuable on the bench as well when Lind is in the starting lineup. If they want to go cheap, I'm sure someone like Denorfia won't break the bank, same Aoki and Smith. As for help either at 2B or 3B, I could see Headley being a bit pricey, though I'm sure Cabrera, Drew, or Lowrie could be acquired at a decent price.

I would bet he isn't in play. I prefer a free agent , not sure how Lowrie,s defense plays on turf but like the bat. Cabrera, Drew, and Headley will go somewhere to build back value so they might sign here

burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted September 6, 2014 Posted September 6, 2014 What does Headley make this offseason? If he has any interest in Toronto I would easily offer him a 1 year deal worth up to 10 million. But it comes back to if he wants to play on the turf. He's put up back to back 3 win seasons in "down years" and there is a lot of offensive upside.
JaysFan4Ever Verified Member Posted September 6, 2014 Author Posted September 6, 2014 Seems like worst case he's back accepting the QO and if he continues where he left off this year maybe a trade piece. If not, he walks and takes more money somewhere, Jays get a first rounder. Not really a bad situation either way providing the Jays have a plan for some offense and defense in LF. JMJ might be a decent fit in a platoon, the aforementioned Pillar/Gose, maybe even Pompay, or some stopgap. As long as the Jays don't f*** up and just stick one guy after another with seemingly no plan other than to save money and one that works it's fine. I'd like him back on a cheap deal if he keeps up his offense for 2-3 years and always holds a potential for a trade later.
prayforthejays Verified Member Posted September 6, 2014 Posted September 6, 2014 If he gets offered that deal he's gone before the ink dries. LOL no doubt....Remember alex always say's he willing to make any deal but only on his terms. Unfortunately his terms are low cost and little guaranteed years. I doubt melky will be back. AA can not sign free agent's period.
