I doubt either gets shut down. I think we will start seeing extra days rest and even skipping the odd start to try and get them to the end of the season. Once we get into the playoffs, if it's a huge concern at that point we may see one or both work out of the pen.

That would work. Stroman I'm less concerned with because I don't view him as an important contributor to the push for the playoffs. That could change if he continues to pitch well and Dickey continues to s*** the bed and Happ joins him. But right now he's a pretty good (not dominant) young pitcher that's had a good couple of starts. That's the team's #5 starter right now.

East said it.

I think most teams would be very happy with 2014 JA Happ as their #5. On this team we should get use to considering him the #3-4 and raise our expectations. He's pitched good enough to deserve the promotion for now.

What? Stroman could be considered our best pitcher

Yea , Unless they fall out of it or Hutch goes thru a dead arm issue again the most I expect is extra days rest. IF Morrow comes back then I see him in the pen. i just don't see a big arm coming in as long as the starters go the way they have been . Just too costly in terms of prospects for a significant upgrade . I prefer an infield bat . Prado costs only money ,i like that he hits lefties well.

No one said different at the moment?

In reference to the pitching exactly how a #5 should pitch comment. I interpret that to mean he's the #5 guy. However it could also mean he's pitching way better than a #5 and in a dream scenario where there's 4 SPs on this roster pitching better than him, would make him a terrific #5. Too bad that's not the case.

A rookie with good (but not dominant) stuff that's been on a bit of a run cannot and should never be considered a team's best starter. Unless you're talking about Strasburg or Fernandez-like abilities, a rookie is not your top guy. And if you have one of those you just hope they don't get injured.

Have you watched a single Stroman start? "Not dominant stuff"? Get the f*** outta here.

Edit: At best you could say "he's a rookie with dominant stuff who needs time to get it all together", but not that he doesn't have dominant stuff. f***, that kid makes incredible hitters look like idiots, and outside of the outing where Mr. Magoo's dumber, blinder brother was behind the plate he's been goddamned astounding.

This Kevin Barker guy has to have the most annoying voice I have ever heard. Hes talking on Baseball Central right now making it sound like Happ is the next Kershaw. Also thinks he sits 94-97..Has he even hit 97 more than once?

Actually, I think how he's put himself together so far IS part of the reason why he's so good. Great use of his off-speed pitches. Maybe you and I just have a different ceiling for what the term dominant is since it is an ambiguous term. He hits around 95 with a plus slider, but I don't think that slider is unhittable once hitters have some time to adjust to him. I'd be very happy to be wrong and have him become ROY with Cy Young candidacy by the end of the year. That would be awesome. But I'm not going to pencil him in like that because usually when you do you're disappointed more often than not.

Fangraphs says his max this year is 95.7, so... lol

I wish Sportsnet would hype up Stroman more instead. People need to know he's legit and isn't a candidate to get replaced by whoever we trade for.

That was my though as well, I remember he touched 96 once.

Agree on Stroman. I think he could easily be the best pitcher for this team for the rest of the season. Meanwhile we have idiots like barker and zaun saying hes a rookie and cant be counted on becasue he hasnt played in the BIG LEAGUES like a VETRIN for some time. Nothing annoys me more when zaun says the words "this is the big league"

In his 2nd to last start where he pitched into the 8th, he hit 96 multiple times.

Good start today...the baffling randomness continues.

4.29 xFIP today ... 4.31 on the season! It's only baffling if you look at imprecise stats like ERA.

J.A. Happ has continued to do J.A. Happ stuff this year. He's a perfectly fine 5th/6th starter. The question that will come up this offseason (and which was debated endlessly last offseason) is whether or not he's worth his contract TO THIS TEAM. He has a $6.7 team option, and everything we know says he's probably worth that cash in a context-neutral environment, but given the team's roster/payroll situation, he's probably not a luxury the team can afford.

Pick up the option and trade him

Probably a lot of hoop-jumping for what would amount to a pretty paltry return. The salary is fair, but teams are going to be able to find a lot of fair salaries for 5/6 starters. If you decide the money is best spent elsewhere, the 200K buyout is likely more attractive than waiting until a GM with $7 million burning a hole in his pocket has struck out on free agency.

Happ has value. Jays could trade him tonight for a decent return. Couple of B grade prospects.

Carlos Perez, Asher Wojciechowski, Kevin Comer, Ben Francisco and Francisco Cordero sound good? Maybe we get David Carpenter and Brandon Lyon in return.

I don't think this is true. Brandon McCarthy returned nothing, and he's a fair bit better than Happ. Most teams avoid paying real money for guys like Happ.

Lol we're fighting the exact same fight in different threads.
