Baseball: Lugbauer drafted by Blue Jays

Arlington High School senior Drew Lugbauer was selected in the 21st round of the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft by the Toronto Blue Jays on Saturday.

"It's probably the greatest feeling in the world. I couldn't be more excited,'' said Lugbauer, who added he's still planning to play next season at the University of Michigan.

"I hope in three years I can take the two off that number and be a first rounder.''

Lugbauer, a 6-foot-3, 220-pound catcher, signed a National Letter of Intent and is scheduled to be a catcher next season at Michigan.

"We spoke to the Blue Jays before the draft and they knew I was going to school. I'm really thankful they selected me,'' Lugbauer said.

"I'm going to keep doing what I've been doing and try to develop as a player to the best of my ability (at Michigan).''

UAB ace goes to Toronto Blue Jays in MLB draft

The Toronto Blue Jays selected UAB pitcher Chase Mallard with the 414th pick in Major League Baseball's First-Year Player Draft on Saturday afternoon.

The right-hander posted a 9-3 record with a 1.55 earned-run average for the Blazers during the 2014 season. In 15 starts, he pitched 110 innings, giving up 74 hits and 22 walks while striking out 94. Opposing batters hit just .191 against the UAB junior.

Mallard's 2014 ERA is a UAB single-season record, and his career ERA of 2.69 also is a school record.

Mallard was a second-team Louisville Slugger NCAA Division I All-American and was the Conference USA Pitcher of the Year in 2014.

Mallard was picked in the 14th round. The first Blazer drafted in 2014, he's also the first UAB player selected since 2011.

Mallard played on Cullman High School's state championship team in 2008.
