The right-hander posted a 9-3 record with a 1.55 earned-run average for the Blazers during the 2014 season. In 15 starts, he pitched 110 innings, giving up 74 hits and 22 walks while striking out 94. Opposing batters hit just .191 against the UAB junior. Mallard's 2014 ERA is a UAB single-season record, and his career ERA of 2.69 also is a school record. Mallard was a second-team Louisville Slugger NCAA Division I All-American and was the Conference USA Pitcher of the Year in 2014. Mallard was picked in the 14th round. The first Blazer drafted in 2014, he's also the first UAB player selected since 2011. Mallard played on Cullman High School's state championship team in 2008. --------------------------------
