Let me start by saying I'm a big Westjet fan. I'll choose them over Air Canada any day. And I'm a big fan of RA Dickey. Love the fact he's a Jay.

But what I'm not a fan of are the Westjet commericals he's a part of! Seems like a big fail on Westjet's end. Every time I see them I just cringe.

What is the point of seeing him checking in and constantly saying no to a seat number until the agent recommends the "plus" seats. The fact he doesn't say a single word just seems idiotic (and makes him come across as a jackass). Just an awful commercial that makes you feel as though it's supposed to be funny, but it's nowhere near it.

And the commercial where the fan says he could catch his knuckleball and RA challenges him feels like it just leaves out the punchline as we never actually get to see him try to catch one.

Please stop airing these!

I needed to vent on an open forum after keeping this in for so long. Thanks guys.

I hated them even more when RA was scuffling.

After his last few starts I can live with them but they are bad.

Go Jays!

Here's your punchline.

And if you think you could come up with something better, send it in, they're asking...

They're awkward and stupid. What are they trying to get across?

The Dickey one where he purchases Plus tickets is stupid. Why is Dickey mute?

The Lawrie one is with the tattoo is awkward with Lawrie creeply giggling/smiling at the hottie.

The Jays really need to get back to the old marketing days of this:

I also couldn't find the Frank Thomas pillow fight one because of the stupid regulatory board that banned it..

LOL Umm he is mute because he is mimicking him shaking off signs from a catcher.

Ummmm..... As long as WestJet keeps giving them money they can do whatever they want. They are f***ing commercials.... Lol I guess this is what happens when you start playing solid baseball people look for something else to bitch about lol.

He's a f***ing knuckleball pitcher!

Exactly. He has two pitches. One which he throws 90% of the time.

This just feels like a complete waste of marketing dollars. I'm confident that we could start a thread and within 3 minutes have a MUCH better idea for a commercial that both promotes Westjet and is more entertaining.

I.e. Brett Lawrie and Westjet.

They can somehow come up with a situation that shows how far Brett Lawrie is going to go to help his team, just like how WestJet values customer service and will go above and beyond for you

vs

Brett Lawrie likes tatoos and WestJet does too

I've had to explain that to friends that don't really watch baseball, I'm surprised that people posting here don't get it.

and even if he is a knuckball pitcher, the joke still applies.

I actually don't mind that add, it would probably be annoying if you didn't 'get' the joke.

Yeah it's shaking off the catcher. That commercial is probably the best of the three. Lawrie's tattoo one is just awkward, and the other Dickey one just sort of peters out without a resolution or punchline. It's weird.

I don't understand why they don't talk in them? Lawrie at the end of his just sits there smirking nodding like an idiot.

agreed on all three points. That Lawrie one just drags on too long for basically no reason.

There are very few commercials that are worth my time, and more often then not, if I see a commercial too many times, I will not buy the product. Examples of this: Those annoying Mac vs PC pieces of s*** commercials that ran for years and years and years. I have never bought an Apple product since. Another example is that Nesspresso crap that's on all the time "It's coffee creme" that is unbelievably annoying and I will never buy their product because of it.

Doesn't seem like people don't "get" it - it just doesn't work well. At all.

hahaha brilliant. I can think back to my MBA classes and how this would be a funny case study to look at. Just completely missed the mark on having an effective commercial.

seemed like it to me. People asking why he is mute... the joke would be ineffective if he was talking.

Both those videos are way better than the ones they air all the time. Why didn't they edit the commercial to include the damn punchline?

Team is winning, so people need something to be negative about...so sad all this negativity.

Oh yeah and Go Rays!

PS. f*** you ECJF I'm wearing my Rays shirt tonight.

They are not as bad as both of these on all the time on sportsnet commercials

1) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KT-Z_sBFvu8

or

2)

Agreed those are even worse. When the smug jerk says "you think?", I just want to punch him in the nose. Line deliverly is so crucial to commercials. You give an annoying line delivery, especially with the punch line, and it's just death because that thing is going to be repeated ad nauseum. After awhile, it's like nails on a chalk board.

Hmm, I don't mind the dry cleaning one. I guess I don't find the guy to be a 'smug jerk'. The guy just talked about knowing all the players, so I don't find it smug.

I do agree that the Martin Short one is unbearable.

They are bad.

They need one of Reyes and the airline staff, flipping between scenes, showing the following characteristics:

Infectious personality - shot of Reyes' smiling face in the dugout switching over to a helpful smiling customer service attendant

Speed - shot of Reyes' stealing bases and switching over to WJ personnel getting people/baggage through quickly

Delivery - shot of Reyes' hitting a homerun and an exuberant WJ pilot/attendant at the end of the flight

I guess this is why I am not in the advertising/marketing field. ;)

Might have been better if she was making sign language at him but that could cause a problem if they do not have any personnel with those skills or some deem it to be not politically correct. All I get from that (I also understand the shaking off signs part) is it appears as if he has a disability and cannot speak for himself or he is hoping someone can read his mind.

Maybe they are trying to show a connection/partnership between the two companies or groups of people? As I see it, if a person has to keep guessing what the idea behind the ad could be then it has not hit the mark. The way he keeps looking at her at the end is really creepy to me.
