Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted May 15, 2014 Posted May 15, 2014 Rod Neyer The bad news is that Jose Fernandez might be finished for a while. The good news is that I'm not going to say I told you so, for the simple reason that I never told you so. But the only reason I didn't tell you so is because I didn't want to be a downer, man. Because I actually would have been surprised if Jose Fernandez did not get hurt. Let's see, who were the young pitching sensations of the last few years ... Stephen Strasburg (ELBOW) ... Matt Harvey (ELBOW) ... and Fernandez ( QUESTION MARK ELBOW). I've got this theory that you're not really allowed to "break" baseball. If you're Strasburg and you're practically the best pitcher in the game when you're 21, something bad's going to happen. If you're Harvey and you're practically unhittable, something bad's going to happen. If you're Fernandez and you're 20 and you're making Clayton Kershaw look over his shoulder, something bad's going to happen. These sorts of ugly thoughts are never far from my mind, but they've been especially close lately, since I just finished reading Dan Epstein's great new book about the '76 season. The biggest story that season was Mark Fidrych, who didn't make his first start until the middle of May but still went 19-9 and finished second in the Cy Young balloting. Fidrych won 10 more games in his whole career. Sinkerballer Randy Jones did win the Cy Young Award in the other league, and went 42-26 over 1975 and '76; he went 43-69 in the remainder of his career. ......................................... http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/jose-fernandez-elbow-injury-tommy-john-surgery-baseball-breaks-young-arms-who-break-rules-051314

Bet he isn't a knuckle baller or throwing a 50 percent or 50 mph either!

connorp Old-Timey Member Posted May 15, 2014 Posted May 15, 2014 I read that article. The catcher played for 17 inning behind the plate and then pitched 7 innings (doubleheader) Yeah actually the C was catching until the top of 15th in the first game and then relieved the kid that threw 194 pitches. The C ended up pitching the last 3 innings of that game then went on to pitch 7 more innings later that day in 2nd game of doubleheader. Crazy.

TheHurl Site Manager Posted May 15, 2014 Posted May 15, 2014 Al Leiter threw 220 pitches in high school and he never had any injury issues...okay bad example
Spoonovic Verified Member Posted May 15, 2014 Posted May 15, 2014 Didn't Tanaka start two days in a row back in High School?

Nobody saw Fidrych coming. Jones had an absurdly low strikeout rate, even for that era. In their own ways, both broke the game. Then the game broke them."
NorthOf49 Old-Timey Member Posted May 15, 2014 Posted May 15, 2014 Hard to take this article seriously without any data being provided. Neyer just finds a bunch of young aces who got hurt in a 40 year sample. Okay.
