Nevertheless, Tanaka is due to regress, something the Yankees can't afford with such lousy depth after him and a Sabathia quagmire, whose xFIP is likely due to his high strikeout rate, and doesn't show the increasing amount of hits he's giving up. He's still getting the Ks, but Sabathia is also getting hit around more. If he had better defense, perhaps his ERA would improve.. but the Yanks, desperate for offense, prefer to play guys like Solarte, Jeter, and Beltran, and sometimes Soriano defensively. His 5.75 ERA is more a result of bad Yankees defense than himself. Put him on the Jays and his ERA would likely be closer to 4.
