G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted April 17, 2014 Posted April 17, 2014 It's a good thing I guess that our major complaint this season has been the bench Presuming Reyes gets back tomorrow and Goins is the every day 2B for a bit again, who do you want on the bench? (if you want to say Kawasaki is the every day 2B and put Goins on bench go ahead) As it stands we have no speed and no one who can play CF on Colby's days off. I still want a 4 man bench and a 7 man pen, especially since we now have multiple guys in the pen who can go long (Redmond, Rogers, Happ) I propose a bench of: Kratz, Kawasaki, Gose and Francisco 50/50 left and right hand bats. Speed. CF backup. Some power. Sierra and Thole are not versatile or good enough. Thoughts?

He might be an o.k. replacement as the main dh but as a bench option, he's basically a left-handed Sierra, another player using up a roster spot while providing no defensive value.

Yeah he may be no better than Sierra. I'll admit that's it's partly the "I've never seen him but he HAS to be better than Sierra" mentality that makes me want him. He may be every bit as bad as Sierra defensively. What we REALLY need to complement our starters is a right hand hitting 4th OF type who is decent on defense. We don't have one right now.

What we REALLY need to complement our starters is a right hand hitting 4th OF type who is decent on defense. We don't have one right now. My ideal bench probably has Getz on it. He's right-handed and covers a lot of positions. The bat isn't much but he's a plus on the field. Might as well go with players who can provide defensive value because the offense only players like Sierra and Francisco might not actually provide any offense. I like the idea of starting Getz against LHP either at 2B or at SS (with Reyes sliding to DH). He might not be too bad against lefties and we know he'll at least improve the defense when he's on the field.
eastcoastjaysfan Old-Timey Member Posted April 17, 2014 Posted April 17, 2014 Francisco has a career wRC+ of 109 against RHP so you could probably bury him in teh 6-7 hole as a DH and not get hurt too much by it.

He's also currently killing it in AAA. I know it's AAA and I know it's SSS and I know hot bats can cool off. But what are Sierra and Diaz doing right now to deserve being there instead of giving him a look? Francisco 2014 in Buffalo: .405/.476/.676 OPS 1.152

Otherwise there's really nowhere to play him.
eastcoastjaysfan Old-Timey Member Posted April 17, 2014 Posted April 17, 2014 Just try and catch lightning in a bottle with Francisco. It probably fails but if he's hot you never know what could happen. It's not like he was completely overmatched in his time in the bigs.

More of a track record than Francisco and is hitting well in AAA.
fatcowxlive Old-Timey Member Posted April 17, 2014 Posted April 17, 2014 Kratz (but because Dickey, Thole), Diaz, Goins, Gose Kawazaki starts at 2B and Reyes at SS Not Fransisco because Lind has his spot. Unless you want to move Lawrie to 2B and butcher the 3B position defensively there's no use
TDotttt2005 Verified Member Posted April 17, 2014 Posted April 17, 2014 Assuming Reyes and Diaz start. Kratz, Gose, Goins, and a toss up between Johnson and Francisco. Both can play first/third, but I think its been a while since Johnson has done it regularly.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted April 17, 2014 Author Posted April 17, 2014 Here's a fan in Montreal, obviously pining for that right hand hitting 4th OF type we need so badly... http://www.bluejaysmessageboard.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=640&d=1397743467

Atothe Old-Timey Member Posted April 17, 2014 Posted April 17, 2014 Diaz has to be on the bench, very versatile. Shortstop, second, third and some outfield. Platoon Saki and Diaz. Kratz, Gose and Schimpf are the bench.
