At the time, we still had D'Arnaud. So unless the plan was to move JPA and start Gomes, why would he have been given a regular run at catcher???

The Jays saw him catch 178 games in the minors. There had to have been some sort of opinion of his defensive game behind the plate.

I know with 100% certainty that the Jays knew they were moving TdA at that point.

BA write up on Gomes after 2012

Gomes was a highly regarded recruit for Tennessee, but transferred to NCAA Division II Barry (Fla.) for his junior season. He hit .405 with 21 homers and a school-record 92 RBIs before signing with the Blue Jays for $85,000 in the 2009 draft. He became the first Brazilian ever to play in the major leagues when he reached Toronto last May. In November, he joined the Indians along with Mike Aviles in a trade for Esmil Rogers before playing for Brazil in a World Baseball Classic qualifier. Gomes generates good bat speed that produces solid power. His hands are high in his load, which can create a little length to his swing, but he's pretty direct to the ball and has shown the ability to make adjustments. Gomes' primary position is catcher, and he has seen action on both infield corners and brief time in left field. He has good hands and feet that allow him to provide solid defense behind the plate. He also has an average arm and threw out 23 percent of Triple-A basestealers in 2012. He's a below-average runner but moves decently for his size. Gomes may not quite profile as a regular, but he could be useful as a backup catcher who can play multiple positions and provide power.

Not far off what anyone who doesn't get enamoured with a blip on the radar has been saying.

With AJ Jimenez being a year behind (year+/2 years recovering from his injury) Gomes. The Jays could've gone with Gomes to start in that time if TDA was a goner. But I would've expected AJJ to have overtaken him at some point, thus making Gomes expendable to trade or moved to a Util position.

With all this talk of Yan Gomes...he's now on the block in the DDL. Thanks guys for marketing my catcher now!

So you're marketing a guy most have tabbed as a 2nd/3rd tier catcher???.....playoffs here I come.

I think this is pretty much what most of us felt. He would have been a great option as a semi-regular bench bat, basically meaning you can carry a 3rd catcher without losing anything. Whether his breakout last year is legit or not, we'll have to see.

For comparison JPA after his first taste of the majors.

The 21st overall pick in 2007, Arencibia has hit 82 homers in three full pro seasons since signing for $1,327,500. LASIK surgery improved his night vision and helped him raise his Triple-A numbers from .236/.284/.444 in 2009 to .301/.359/.626 last season, earning him Pacific Coast League MVP honors. Called to Toronto in August, he became the first player in modern baseball history to collect four hits and two homers in his big league debut. Afterward, he went 1-for-30 with 11 strikeouts. Arencibia's carrying tool is his power to all fields, which is at least above-average and draws 70 grades on the 20-80 scale from some scouts. He overswings at times and isn't terribly disciplined at the plate, so he may not hit for a high average. His defense also is in question. He has solid arm strength but threw out just 23 percent of PCL basestealers. His receiving and blocking skills are improving, though just average at best, and he can get lackadaisical at times. He has below-average speed but isn't terrible for a catcher. John Buck made his first all-star team in 2010, but he departed as a free agent to the Marlins, leaving Arencibia as the favorite to win the catching job out of spring training in 2011.

Like I said I see Gomes being very Alex Avila like for the next bit of his career. Sadly that would make him the second best catcher this organization has ever seen. All these veteran catchers, and a veteran back up 3B last year...maybe could have been covered by one player (and we could have carried another catcher on the 40 man). Although if Gomes stayed in Toronto I somehow doubt we'd ever have the breakout.

As for AJJ, I really like him. But he's shown nothing that points him towards a league average bat. His value is in his defense....whereas Gomes also appears to have that defensive value. Now why did the Jays not see that defense?

That's probably what I would have said too. There's some holes in his swing. The deal was bad given Lawrie and Reyes' injury history and giving away Aviles, not necessarily for Gomes at the time. That being said they wanted to see what Rogers could do and to be fair his ceiling was and still is a lot higher than Aviles'.

To be fair, Reyes hadn't been acquired at the time and they still had Escobar, Hech, D'Arnaud, Mathis and JPA.

It was seen as an overpayment at the time. Let's hope A.J. Jimenez can be a comparable player.

Major concern. Another issue is how AA turned an organizational position of strength to one of weakness all in a span of 6 months or so. One can only hope these issues are addressed.

I don't believe the defence is as good as its currently being proclaimed to be, otherwise he would've been talked about.

You have kids like Christian Vazquez in Boston & Tucker Barnhart in Cincy with similar or weaker bats to Gomes and they're getting talked about from multiple reputable sources on a yearly basis. So their defence must be notch or multiple notches ahead of Gomes.

A player who is "good" and gets overlooked every year by everyone is what Bautista was. And I don't care to try and figure out who those players are.

Framing is a big part of his defence, and I don't think it is scouted near as much as it should be.

Aside from the formula you came up with, is it possible to even scout framing?

It's such a refined skill that catcher's may not even realize they're good at it. And for a baseball person/scout to sit and watch a catcher who may get a couple+ extra calls a game is almost missable.

I just posted a BA report showing them reporting him as a good defender. As with most cases when a player gets moved around in the minors they get a rep for being bad defenders (think Lawrie). He got to catch 172 games with us, we never really gave him a chance. I find it hard to believe that the reports now are that he's a good defensive catcher are solely based on people looking at metrics and assuming it's true. He got rave reviews last season from just about everyone.

Sure can...have your own PitchFX type data.

And Bautista got rave reviews when he started hitting HR's.

As for Lawrie and his bad defence at 2B, atleast there was talk about Lawrie. I see very little to nothing about Gomes in the bit of info/access I have. And until you posted your report from after Gomes was in the majors where was anyone talking about him?

Great that BA posted something in late 2012/2013. 3-4 years might be long enough to hold of on unveiling this mega star no one knew or cared about while in the minors.

Even after his very good year last year, and looking at his peers as comp's. He falls in as a tail end 2nd tier C.

So its video scouting and still a very refined trait. But a scout sitting at a game cannot sit and watch and say this kids a good framer.

What formula? There is solid framing data available on BP and Brooks. It's also really obvious what to look for and scout. Proabably the easiest skill to scout actually, unless you're in the stands behind the catcher lol. You look for limited body movement, quick and small movement of the glove. Some catchers don't even look like they try.

I thought you came up with a formula on framing some months back??

As for the other stuff you mentioned (quiet deep glove, providing a good long target for the pitcher....etc) are traits of a good defensive catcher and have been so for a long time.

can't scout any defense that way.

Picked him up in fantasy ball. I am using the "Don't Do what Donny Don't does" technique but applying it to AA. AA dumps Gomes, I pick him up.
