Dylan Old-Timey Member Posted January 26, 2014 Posted January 26, 2014 (edited) 2014 WINNER - LETTHEBALLFLY http://i1312.photobucket.com/albums/t538/BlueJays20131/hr2_zps4bac6d4f.png Standings -> https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0ApDzFSM6T0mMdFpnd3JNYjNiM2RLRlI0ODlPS0JuT0E&usp=sharing Since there was pretty good participation last year I decided to host this contest again this year. I'm posting this early so that everyone has a chance to find out about it before the season starts... and because nothing else is happening. For those who are new, this is just a simple/fun contest that makes each game a bit more interesting to watch. All you need to do is pick a player you think will hit a home run during each game. It's fine if you don't pick every game, and you can join in at any time during the season. To make things more interesting, all home runs will count this season and not just the first one. There is however, a small bonus for picking the first home run each game. To make sure that people don't just pick the same person the entire season, you can only pick the same player 4 times each week. I will try my best to keep things updated and may ask for help if I'm away for a long period of time. Hopefully there is a lot of participation again this year and some good competition. Good luck everyone! Congrats again to angrioter on finishing first last season and bowld for coming in 2nd place. http://i1312.photobucket.com/albums/t538/BlueJays20131/point_zps1b34688f.png Bautista - 1 Point Edwin - 1 Point Rasmus - 2 Points Francisco - 2 Points Melky - 2 Points Lawrie - 3 Points Lind - 4 Points Reyes - 4 Points Navarro - 4 Points Reimold- 5 Points Johnson- 7 Points Tolleson - 7 Points Glenn - 7 Points Pillar - 8 Points Gose - 9 Points Diaz - 8 Points Gillespie - 8 Points Goins - 9 Points Mastroianni - 9 Points Kawasaki - 9 Points Thole - 9 Points The Bench - 10 Points ** Read the thread for updated point values before each game. http://i1312.photobucket.com/albums/t538/BlueJays20131/bp_zpsd7a7ffa2.png http://i1312.photobucket.com/albums/t538/BlueJays20131/rules_zps4ccf26b1.png Pick a player on the Jay's starting lineup that you think will hit a home run at ANY TIME during each game. You can only pick the same player 4 times during each week (Monday-Sunday) If you pick a correct player you will earn the corresponding points. Players less likely to hit a home run will be worth more points than those more likely to knock one out. Point values will change daily depending on hot and cold streaks, and will be posted before each game. You can only pick one player and you must have your pick in before the first Blue Jays at bat. *Weekend games will be "bonus days" (pick two players, pick players from other team etc.) Schedule in 2nd thread post You may post your pick before the daily lineups are posted if you will not be online before the game starts. If you are going away, you can PM Dylan your picks for the upcoming games (Max 5 games) Streaks will get you bonus points. Streaks must be in consecutive games, if you miss a game your streak is over. *The season will be divided into two sets at June 9th, 2014, playoff information is posted below. If you have any questions post them here or PM me. http://i1312.photobucket.com/albums/t538/BlueJays20131/pf_zps59cbc4c6.png Season divided into 2 sets First Half: March 31st-June 8th. NorthOf49 Old-Timey Member Posted January 26, 2014 Posted January 26, 2014 There should be an asterisk beside your name because of the shortened season. May as well close this thread now because I'm taking it all this year!! King, you need to clear out your PM inbox. It's full. -- Very happy about my fourth place finish last year!
Dylan Old-Timey Member Posted January 26, 2014 Author Posted January 26, 2014 Cleared Dylan, are you going to have bonus days again this year? Those were a lot of fun last season. Most likely, but I'm not having a "no home run" option this year.
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted January 26, 2014 Posted January 26, 2014 King, you need to clear out your PM inbox. It's full. -- Very happy about my fourth place finish last year! Nada mal, nada mal!! FHRC - 1st L2 - 2nd FAPC - 4th place so far
NorthOf49 Old-Timey Member Posted January 26, 2014 Posted January 26, 2014 Nada mal, nada mal!! FHRC - 1st L2 - 2nd FAPC - 4th place so far I'm probably going to create a "2014 MLB Predictions Contest" in Spring Training, based on the success of FAPC and how well Google Docs have worked for that. You're the early favourite for it lol. Most likely, but I'm not having a "no home run" option this year. No! That's how I made all my hay last year. Makes sense tho.
Dylan Old-Timey Member Posted January 26, 2014 Author Posted January 26, 2014 lol, good idea. As as suggestion, I would also put playoff rules in the OP as well as the bonus days you are planning on having. Done. Not sure how playoffs will work this year.. last season was pretty dull when it comes down to a few people. Maybe it's just better to divide the season into 2 sets, there would be winners for each half and then overall.

Dylan Old-Timey Member Posted January 26, 2014 Author Posted January 26, 2014 Hmmm. That seems like an interesting way. It would give players who have fallen behind by the halfway mark a chance to play for something towards the end of the season! That's what I was thinking.. the playoffs last season were more than dull, they were brutal lol.
Dylan Old-Timey Member Posted January 26, 2014 Author Posted January 26, 2014 Possible bonus days - Pick 2 players - Pick an opponent player as well - Pick which pitcher will give up the most home runs that week - Guess how many home runs that day If anyone has some more ideas post them.
Dylan Old-Timey Member Posted January 26, 2014 Author Posted January 26, 2014 Bonus day: Double points Triple points Which team will hit the first home run? I know that if we were to do double points, I'd have to post it well before so everyone will know.. not sure if it is worth making a pre-arranged bonus day schedule and post it, or just do it randomly throughout the season.
Dylan Old-Timey Member Posted January 26, 2014 Author Posted January 26, 2014 You could also have a bonus day where you pick a player from one of the Jays MiLB affiliates to hit a home run. EX: Pick a Buffalo Bison player that will hit a home run tonight Another interesting idea. I'll take a poll to see if people prefer playoffs or split the season into 2 sets, which you prefer?
GD Old-Timey Member Posted January 27, 2014 Posted January 27, 2014 Ahh this made games so much more exciting last year. Glad it's back! Thanks Dylan!

Dylan Old-Timey Member Posted January 30, 2014 Author Posted January 30, 2014 I'm going to go with the two sets.. allows everyone to play all season. Reset the standings after 81 games, but also keep track of the Overall standings.

Reset the standings after 81 games, but also keep track of the Overall standings. You should do something similar to the minor league playoff races with first and second halves.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted January 30, 2014 Posted January 30, 2014 you could have a weekly pool for what pitcher will give up the most dingers. I'll pick Ervin Santana for the entire season
Dylan Old-Timey Member Posted February 1, 2014 Author Posted February 1, 2014 You should do something similar to the minor league playoff races with first and second halves. Still not sure if we were to do a playoffs format whether it would be elimination rounds or just like a 3-4 week period and just the overall standings from that.
Dylan Old-Timey Member Posted February 1, 2014 Author Posted February 1, 2014 Maybe something like this will make it more entertaining than last year. Season divided into 2 sets First Half: March 31st-June 8th. (64 games) Second Half: June 9th - August 20th (63 games) Playoffs Round 1: August 22nd-September 4th (22 Members, not including 2 byes) Round 2: September 6th- September 17th (Top 15 members from round 1) Round 3: September 15th-September 28th (Top 8 members from round 2, + 2 Byes) - Top 12 members from each half move on to the playoffs - Winners from each half get a bye to the final playoff round. - Playoff ties go to the member with the most overall points during the season. - Top 12 members in the second half does not include those who made it during the first half. - Still important for those who make playoffs in the first half, to increase overall points during the second half. This format keeps competition important all year round. Different from last year with, less and longer rounds, and more people will keep things more interesting.
theblujay Verified Member Posted February 1, 2014 Posted February 1, 2014 It definitely fell off last year over the summer as the Jays sucked, so 2 sets is for sure a good idea.

theblujay Verified Member Posted February 1, 2014 Posted February 1, 2014 Posted at the same time, check the post above, think that would work? Yeah I like it. Maybe a first round bye for 2/3rd?
Dylan Old-Timey Member Posted February 1, 2014 Author Posted February 1, 2014 Yeah I like it. Maybe a first round bye for 2/3rd? I like that idea. 2nd/3rd place from each half will get a bye to the second round

So someone could sit out the entire first half and then play in the second half and potentially make the playoffs over someone who played the entire season and had more points overall? Should be the best teams overall. Maybe have more bonus point days and identify which days they will be on prior to the season. You could then decide on the day what the bonus points will be based on. Small things like that will help to increase interest and activity and makes it a fair playing field for everyone.
Dylan Old-Timey Member Posted February 1, 2014 Author Posted February 1, 2014 So someone could sit out the entire first half and then play in the second half and potentially make the playoffs over someone who played the entire season and had more points overall? Although this is true, it allows people that joined the forum, or didn't know about the contest, to still have a chance in the second half. Also, it allows members that sucked completely in the first half to still be interested in it. Would it be better to have more people make the playoffs, say 14 or 16 from each half?

Small things like that will help to increase interest and activity and makes it a fair playing field for everyone. Going with JFas's idea with every/most weekend games will be a bonus day. Saturday's will be a 1 point bonus such as picking which team hits one first or who wins the game etc. Sundays will be bigger bonus days like picking two players, possibly picking players from the opponent too, etc. If people want, I can make a schedule of what the bonus's are exactly before the season starts.

Sounds good. A schedule would help to keep some interested who want to win but may not be free every game to participate.
