He's quite the wildcard - pitching like a Cy-guy in 2012 before getting injured. Maybe this extended rest will translate to an injury free 2014.

A return to health and 2012 form vaults the Jays into contender status IMO.

Big time. The fact we literally got ZERO production from two guys (JJ, Morrow), that some experts picked to be CY Young winners, just destroyed us.

If Morrow didn't get injured last season he may have been on pace to give up the most HRs ever in a single season.

Morrow's peripherals haven't been eye-popping since 2011 (far from it). He no longer posts great swinging strike or chase rates. The grading on his stuff is the only thing supporting the supposed ace ceiling, not stats or mechanical breakdowns. You just have to hope he finally figures out how to use the stuff.

I found this article misleading. The author made some fancy GIFs and mapped them to his ERA at the time. He then used the ERA to prove that Morrow's mechanics were good or bad at the time. Some quotes, to form a synopsis:

"Morrow saw a home run and BABIP spike with runners on base in 2011 as a result—assumedly—of his altered mechanics and the implementation of the slide step in his delivery." (He got unlucky with runners on base. It's a reach to point directly at the slide step)

"Again, the changes with the exaggerated twist affected his timing towards the plate and resulted in him losing command." (He's never had great command and nothing in the stats show it was particularly hurt during this time, when he supposedly had drastically different mechanics)

"2012 was easily his most repeatable and smoothest delivery since arriving in Toronto. Once again Jays fans were delighted as we saw Morrow reach his full potential as a starter." (Or maybe he just happened to post a fluky ERA)

"2013 saw yet another regression when it came to Morrow and mechanical adjustments." (His K rate just regressed to what 2012's PitchFX stats displayed, combined with a fluky bad HR rate)

"It’s possible that his arm was uncomfortable and affected his ability to repeat his mechanics. Frustrations with not being able to get loose prior to games could have affected his mental focus." (Unsubstantiated excuses)

It seems like the author wanted to write an article about how Morrow wasn't broken and was still an ace waiting to happen (an annual ritual, as Ziggyy remarks), and then looked for the evidence to back it up (instead of the other way around). And inserted some GIF analysis because that makes breakdown articles seem legit.

I don't think that the times of the pic are the same.

Ah the annual winter article of how good Morrow will finally be the upcoming season.

Yup, were getting closer to the season.

My thoughts exactly. Guy is made of glass and him being a diabetic surely doesn't help things. Morrow is an fantastic talent but it's the same story every year. Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me.

This SOB owes the Jays a 20 win season and a no hitter

2014 would be a nice time for those to happen

I swear you/someone posted this exact same thing last year but with "2013" and not "2014"

Yes , IF and this is a big IF we are to get to the playoffs it will be because Morrow finally lived up to his stuff and gave us 32 starts and Dickey had his velocity all year and adjusted to the AL small ballparks . Certainly this team has talent but health has derailed the jays so damn much the last few years that I find it hard to believe we can have a reasonable season injury wise .

I have stated all off season that no matter who we add to the roster Morrow and Dickey need to perform or we are going nowhere . I want to hope that the injury God finally gives us a break but I just look at the last few years and find it hard to have any faith the team can stay healthy enough to perform at their talent level.

Yep

This team should score reasonably well, but to win 88-92 games requires at least some occasional gem pitching performances to steal extra games here and there. Lord knows we got VERY few of those last year. And Morrow and Dickey are the ones who should be doing it. Buehrle and Hutch should be able to keep the team in the games most nights, but RAD and BM (LOL @ unfortunate abbreviation) are capable of 8 innings of 1-2 hit shutout ball. You need some of that.

Even bigger might be if RR finally got it back together again coming out of the spring. It would be great for that contract not to be dead weight.

I'm more optimistic that Morrow throws 190 innings than I am of Ricky being a productive member of the major league club. A Romero comeback at this point just seems inconceivable. A healthy year for Morrow feels unlikely but at least possible.

Yeah, I agree. Man would it be a huge boost though if RR could get it together again.

Would be massively helpful, no doubt

Yeah. What's the Vegas odds on another 60 DL stint for this guy? I'd bet heavy on it

Anyone know of a site that tracks all of a player's DL stints?

Posted
Thanks for that. Unfortunately, it looks like it would take quite a lot of clicking to compile a list of his stints. I was just curious as to how many 60 day DL stints he's had.

True. Not sure if any site keeps just pure stats like number of times/lengths of DL stints. It's all on this one, but with a lot of extra crap mixed in.

Has there been a more frustrating player the last couple of years than Brandon Morrow, so much talent , can't stay healthy, numbers seem to just keep getting worse. A potential number 1 guy that you can hardly count on as a number 5. Sure hope this is finally the year

Baseball Prospectus has all that fun stuff! On their player pages.
