Sammy225 Old-Timey Member Posted January 15, 2014 Posted January 15, 2014 She wants a west coast city to continue her career and I believe Seattle might be a dark horse in this . Meh , marriage probably won't be long anyway . Once all those Japanese Groupies start circling every time he is on the road He would have to be a better man than most to say no . Whenever I was in Seattle to watch Ichiro they were all over the stadium and some would have been damn hard to resist I don't see Seattle as a dark horse. I would say they are one of the top 3 teams that will get him. It will either be NYY LAD or SEA. LAA don't have the money apparently and the way that Seattle treated Ichiro I could see him taking that into consideration and not to mention they just bought huge on Cano they still need help if they want to compete, they would have to be pretty close minded if they think they can compete with what they have. Just my opinion though. You don't get Cano and be satisfied.

Dylan Old-Timey Member Posted January 16, 2014 Posted January 16, 2014 Ftfy I'd love him on the Mariners!! Makes a lot of sense going forward for them.
vic city Verified Member Posted January 16, 2014 Posted January 16, 2014 Dear Tanaka, Please sign with the dodgers or yankees now so that the rest of the league can move on with this offseason.. Signed, Fans of less significant teams. Pretty much hey? This board needs a spark! I also can't help but think Kershaw's new contract is going to drive FA prices up even more...
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted January 16, 2014 Posted January 16, 2014 I don't think Kershaw's will have an impact (although I'm sure the agents will try). If Tanaka gets closer to 18M per, it's going to kill the other FA. If he gets 22M-25M, it's going to elevate them like crazy. It all depends on Tanaka.
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted January 16, 2014 Posted January 16, 2014 I'm evenly split on whether I want Tanaka to go to LA based on how much fun it's going to be watching him carve up the NL, or the tidal wave of Yankee tears that will follow. Either way... Could be just as much fun if Seattle "stole" Tanaka AND Cano from NYY. That should really rile them up.
Key22 Verified Member Posted January 16, 2014 Posted January 16, 2014 On the other hand it would be cool to have the Yankees give him $23million a year for 7 years and have a guy who ends up getting lit up night after night after night. The Yankees are in the lead on Tanaka now probably - at least in terms of money. They apparently have $39 million in cap space (and it's not really a cap anyway).

Dodgers seem to be a management call on whether or not to go after him, and with their current inflated payroll who knows if they'll open it up even further (best guess is yes, but ...). Angels are probably at their spending limit. Seattle really could be the front runners.
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted January 16, 2014 Posted January 16, 2014 I think I could actually see the Yankees stay under the cap this year, then next year go after something like Hanley Ramirez, Asdrubal Cabrera, Scherzer, and Bailey.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted January 16, 2014 Posted January 16, 2014 I'd love for the Cubs to sign him. But everything he's said about where he wants to play makes it seem very unlikely.

In terms of proximity to Japan, Chicago, New York and Toronto are probably about the same, assuming a direct flight using the northern flight path. Only the West Coast teams have a real advantage with Seattle obviously being the very best. Of course, I don't know if you were thinking along those terms.

I always find this proximity issue thing people bring up funny. The only way to get to Japan is by plane. It's an 11 hour and 40 minute flight from LA and a 13 hour and 10 minute flight from Toronto. Is an hour and a half flight difference the difference maker? Everyone wants the Cubs to sign Tanaka, but I just want him to sign wherever he's going so the rest of the teams can move on to other free agents.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted January 18, 2014 Posted January 18, 2014 Bad spelling notwithstanding this sounds legit
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted January 18, 2014 Posted January 18, 2014 At least he got "their" right the second time.
jaysfan2014 Old-Timey Member Posted January 18, 2014 Posted January 18, 2014 They don't have $39M in cap space.. it's more like $3-4M at most after arb raises/benefits/call-ups. And besides, the Cubs are a strong bet to get him.
FireAlexAnthopoulos Verified Member Posted January 19, 2014 Posted January 19, 2014 Is anyone else just really bored of this Tanaka saga now? I wish he'd just hurry up and choose which team gets to overpay him before he's proven anything.
Gorlak Verified Member Posted January 19, 2014 Posted January 19, 2014 Although you could be correct, Many people thought that about Darvish.
jaysfan2014 Old-Timey Member Posted January 19, 2014 Posted January 19, 2014 Exactly. We haven't seen Tanaka pitch in the MLB--he could be like Yu Darvish, but he could also end up like Hideki Irabu, Kei Igawa or Daisuke Matsuzaka. This could be either be a great signing--or a tremendous bust that costs a certain GM their job. Remember, Japanese pitchers pitch with a smaller ball than the MLB, which increases their risk. Our Jays should focus more on Santana, Garza, Jimenez, etc. They're going to get desperate to sign once this saga ends.
jaysfan2014 Old-Timey Member Posted January 19, 2014 Posted January 19, 2014 Most likely Jimenez or Santana with the Jays, and Garza with the Angels. Arroyo is still a question mark.. Orioles, Yankees and others are in on him, but it's questionable how his talent would translate in the AL having to face 9 batters with a DH instead of 8 hitters and a pitcher. Dodgers are also rumored on Arroyo if Tanaka doesn't sign with them.
Gorlak Verified Member Posted January 19, 2014 Posted January 19, 2014 I don't think the Jays will sign anybody really. If the Cubs get Tanaka I think the Yankees, Angels, And Daimondbacks take them. Ubaldo is the only good fit and I think he will be the most coveted.
jaysfan2014 Old-Timey Member Posted January 19, 2014 Posted January 19, 2014 One problem.. there's draft pick compensation involved with Santana and Jimenez, so you can count the Yanks and D-Backs out on them. Plus, the Yanks don't seem interested in anyone other than Tanaka.

awsomest Verified Member Posted January 19, 2014 Posted January 19, 2014 The big advantage for the Jays is they are the only team of the lot who don't have to give up a first rounder. And then if they sign a second pitcher that pick is even lower. Its kind of how the Indians ended up with a bunch of free agents at the end like bourn.
woods of ypres Verified Member Posted January 19, 2014 Posted January 19, 2014 I think he goes to the White Sox. They're always the dark horse, under the radar, stealth bomb type, or so it seems, anyway.

All it will take is somebody else signing Ubaldo. With Santana's homerun problems he's not a realistic choice.
Gorlak Verified Member Posted January 19, 2014 Posted January 19, 2014 Really is a perfect fit, But then monies once again takes Toronto out of it.
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted January 19, 2014 Posted January 19, 2014 Pretty disappointed we didn't even make an offer. It depends. It's possible that Tanaka said specifically that he wasn't interested in Toronto, in which case there's no point. I don't recall who listed the teams who bid, but unless the list was posted by his agent it's also possible that other teams bid that have been kept quiet so far.
