eastcoastjaysfan Old-Timey Member Posted October 25, 2013 Posted October 25, 2013 Here comes another annoying Cabrera vs Trout debate
eastcoastjaysfan Old-Timey Member Posted October 25, 2013 Posted October 25, 2013 Gary Hughes Red Sox Pro Scouting Consultant “The kid has played two wonderful years. I hate to put too much on him—that’s probably not fair—to think what he could do for 15 years. It’s probably not good to compare him to people like (Mickey) Mantle or (Willie) Mays yet until he’s done it for 10-15 years. “I only saw him once in high school (while scouting for the Cubs), but when I did, I saw him run over the catcher. I thought to myself, ‘This guy is risking a lot!’ “Everyone knew he was a first-round pick. His tools, I mean the speed was obvious, but it was more the aggressive play and the work he put into it. He was really exciting to watch even then. “If you re-did that (2009) draft, even with (Stephen) Strasburg, no doubt 30 out of 30 would take Trout one-one every time. “(His power is) not a surprise, but I am surprised that it has come along to the extent that it has. It’s not like he plays in a small park. But after the last two years of seeing that package of tools, nothing should surprise us. “Ken Griffey Jr. is probably the highest OFP (overall future potential grade) I’ve ever had. The game was just so easy for him, and he was just the best kid I’ve seen at that age. Alex Rodriguez had to be pretty high—he was a man against boys in high school. “I still think it’s unfair to (Trout) to put him on the mountain yet. Mays is the best player I saw. I’ve been doing this 48 years, and no, he doesn’t remind me of Mays. Mays’ instincts were better than anybody who ever played. “That WAR thing, maybe somebody will sit down and explain it to me, because it sounds complicated. But if it says Trout is the best ballplayer in the big leagues, then there’s something to it.” -- It's quite scary to think that people like this have opinions that are valued in today's modern game. The kid has had one of the greatest starts to a career in history and this dinosaur just keeps trying to discredit him.

Like no s*** sherlock..glad we need a pro scout to confirm this for us. Baseball scouting and management has become such a joke and it reminds me of goverment employees. You just need to know someone to get in, abilities/skills are irrelevant.
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted October 25, 2013 Author Posted October 25, 2013 Position players in age 22 season or younger by fWAR, all time:

[th]Player[/th] [th]Year[/th] [th]fWAR[/th]

Ted Williams 1941 11.0

Mike Trout 2013 10.4

Mike Trout 2012 10.0

Eddie Collins 1909 10.0

Stan Musial 1943 9.9

Ty Cobb 1909 9.7

Rogers Hornsby 1917 9.5

Also, Ken Griffey career highs: 164 wRC+ (1993), 9.7 WAR (1996). Trout was better than both of those stats... in each of his first two seasons. In general, people tend to overvalue the present. But in this case, Trout's performance to date cannot be overstated. He is the best young baseball player ever... and there's a good chance he'll end up as an inner circle HOFer. People in 70 years will be talking about Trout as we do with Ruth and Williams. I need to tweet that.
eastcoastjaysfan Old-Timey Member Posted October 25, 2013 Posted October 25, 2013 Another thing to take from that article... Bobby Abreu was a criminally underrated ballplayer.

Sorry bro, Gotta wait 10-15 years before proclaiming him a great player. 80 year old Boston scout said so. Trout is actually quite underrated IMO. I think if you polled 1000 random casual fans at the ballparks a lot of them wouldn't be able to pick Trout out of a lineup.
z3r0s Old-Timey Member Posted October 25, 2013 Posted October 25, 2013 Ted Williams is a f***ing badass that is all
connorp Old-Timey Member Posted October 26, 2013 Posted October 26, 2013 So glad this didnt turn into Trout v Cabrera
