HERPDERP Old-Timey Member Posted July 31, 2013 Posted July 31, 2013 Quietly having a pretty good season in limited AB http://www.fangraphs.com/statss.aspx?playerid=9627&position=C Only 148 AB but across a full season he would have +20 homers. He's also hitting a respectable .290. Yeah he's not a full-time catcher but no way is he as bad as JP.

I was folllowing Yan Gomes but the "hole in the swing" crew told me not to. They said he had a "hole in his swing" and was destined for doom. Interesting player to follow,... really a controversial one in that it puts the scouts on trial... both the professional scouts and the arm chair scouts on this board have it on record that Yan Gomes cannot possibly suceed because of the "hole in his swing". They may be right, they may be wrong. Not a lot of at bats yet. Interesting to see how this develops.
eastcoastjaysfan Old-Timey Member Posted July 31, 2013 Posted July 31, 2013 Didn't like this trade at the start Liked the trade a bit more when Rogers started pitching well Almost indifferent to teh trade now as both Rogers and Gomes should not be able to sustain their current performance.
Deadpool Old-Timey Member Posted July 31, 2013 Posted July 31, 2013 Yan Gomes >>> JPA This isn't exactly a ringing endorsement for Yan Gomes.

ElNik2013 Old-Timey Member Posted August 1, 2013 Posted August 1, 2013 I never understood why it took Aviles and Gomes to get a guy like Rogers. Now, yes, Rogers has given the Blue Jays some quality starts, but I don't think that's relevant to the issue of what it took to get him from Cleveland. Looks to me like AA overpaid again. Would Gomes be a better backup than Blanco/Thole? It looks like it, but then again, he can't catch the knuckleball. Once we get into the issue of the backup catcher having to be able to catch the knuckler, it opens up more questions about AA's inability to negotiate a better deal with Alderson given that the Jays had to limit themselves to having to find a catcher who can catch the knuckleball. Anyway.....
Arkadium Verified Member Posted August 1, 2013 Posted August 1, 2013 Santana better start throwing out runners or Gomes is gonna take his job
walkoff93 Verified Member Posted August 2, 2013 Posted August 2, 2013 Indians view Yan Gomes as an excellent defender. Considering he also has power and has hit at every level hes played at. I don't understand why we were so quick to throw him away. His position versatility is also a big asset. Don't forget, at the time of the trade they still had Travis D'arnaud and Jeff Mathis
TheHurl Site Manager Posted August 2, 2013 Posted August 2, 2013 This has been brought up before. I was folllowing Yan Gomes but the "hole in the swing" crew told me not to. They may be right, they may be wrong. Not a lot of at bats yet. Interesting to see how this develops. Gomes struck out 27% in 2010, 24% in 2011, 21.6% in AAA last year and 28.8% in Toronto. I do like it when guys show improvement in K's as they move through the minors, it's a telling sign that they can improve in the majors too...but he's currently at 18.8% in the majors...can't say I saw this coming at all. It's only a 160 PA sample size but it's certainly a promising sign and I'd love to here someone talk about what he's doing different so we can maybe look for it in other Jays org guys (I'm making wild assumptions that the Jays might have some systemic issues with K-Rates). The other crazy thing about Gomes is that he's throwing out runners in the majors at rates that he never got close to in the minors. Overall he's probably playing beyond his skill set but as I said in the around baseball thread today, he's currently the ultimate back up catcher.
