I remember last summer after Thames and Snider were traded, everyone assumed there would be another big move at the deadline to replace them. Maybe Justin Upton.

This feels like that.

Yeah sounds like he really wanted Upton. That would have been friggin' sweet.

Don't agree with this, they're moving Lawrie because of Izturis. Whatever makes sense to them I guess.

They are seeing if they can expand their trade/FA options. At some point you have to get a look at Lawrie at 2nd in major league games before deciding whether that is a valid course of action.

So this is Gibbons' decision from what I've read. He's putting his behind on the line on this one, I'd have to think he's thought about this for a while.

OK Alex, what is the real plan for third base?!?!?!

I wouldn't be surprised if he's agreeing to a trade for a 3B

or he's throwing EE there and we're acquiring a 1B/DH

or he's making us speculate and it's only to see how Lawrie does as an MLB 2B lol

So they're experimenting in a year they said they were "ALL IN", just awesome.

This... Everyone is so quick to jump off the boat. He's a young player, he's going to struggle at times

I agree with this, not sure it helps his struggling offense to have to change positions in the middle of the year.

For sure

I've complained about him lots. But no way do I want them to trade him. 2-3 more years and see what he can do.

Or maybe it takes his mind of it. Helps him relax and worry about something else. Sometimes change is good.

This crossed my mind as I typed my comment. We'll see what happens, even if this works out well, they still have a gaping hole in the IF.

There's no use putting it any other way, there has to be a trade in the works. It just doesn't add up. Lawrie has great defense at 3B, so we are moving him to 2B in favor of Izturis? There's no f***ING way

Agree

Izturis at 3B is no way what they have in mind. No chance.

Well, they had Izturis/Bonifacio in mind for 2B, so who knows!

It's AA bro, you never know.

Come to think about it, I don't know what's worse, playing Lawrie at 2B and Izzy at 3B for no reason, or AA overpaying for an ageing 3B

This is definitely possible. Who knows how it will turn out. But it sounds like he's really excited about playing second. Could that enthusiasm spill over in to his hitting? Maybe. Could it somehow hurt it? Seems less likely to me. But again, who knows...

Well the season is pretty much over, so what else are they supposed to do?

Yep. High risk moves are worth it right now. If it pays off, great. If it doesn't we were sunk anyhow...

Alright, so there's no excuse to not trade relievers at the deadline as well as shopping JJ and Buehrle.

Well, if it works out, all it means is that instead of 2B being a black hole, it's 3B.

I am not sure there is any trade in the works for a 3B right now. This may simply be a situation where they want to see if Brett can handle 2B and if he can then AA has the flexibility to look for a 2B or 3B when one becomes available.

Good luck trying to move Buehrle. Jays would have to eat a chunk of that contract to the point where it probably wouldn't make any sense to move him.

If they move relievers and get something decent in return, that would be fine. I hope they actually take a look at what they could get for JJ, but I sense that they don't want to give up on the season.

Also very possible

AA doesn't know whether to target a 2B or 3B. Seeing how Lawrie does at second for a half season helps him decide.

The only think I'm sure of is that he will not stand pat on the roster for long. An upgrade at 2B, 3B or OF is all possible.

I am fine with keeping JJ and offering him a QO. if he accepts, we have him for next year, if he doesn't we get the pick. I like either.

As for RP, Janssen and Oliver should be at the top of the to move list.

All I can say is, let's try to enjoy the ride. Hopefully they will play good enough on the field for me to stay and watch it.

Yeah, I get the feeling this team is going to see some big changes between now and next spring. AA has to put everything into this team contending next year or he will be on the hot seat.

I agree on 2B/3B, but disagree that he's looking for an upgrade in the OF. He would be admitting to being wrong on Cabrera by acquiring another OF and I don't think he's ready to do that. I feel the same about pitching, he depleted the farm and used up his payroll flexibility to address the starting rotation and to go out and give up more prospects to address a need he THOUGHT he had addressed in the offseason would be to admit failure.

But he has failed and everyone knows it. He can hide behind his decisions and then lose his job or try to fix this mess.

Does he know it though? Or does he chalk it up to bad injury luck? As I said, I can see him addressing 2B/3B and maybe C, but not OF/DH and starting pitching beyond replacing JJ which shouldn't that hard to do given his performance.

It's generally easier to get injured at 2b. Wonder how long it'll take.

Not so sure about that. I almost feel sorry for any runner that decides they want to take him out. No walls to run into/over either.

Gibby sez:

@Wilnerness590: Gibby: We're in the cellar, so if (Lawrie) struggles, we're not gonna fall any further. Maybe he gives us a shot in the arm #Bluejays #Jays

A move to 2B moves Lawrie further from walls, rails and TV camera pits. I think his injury risk will be lower.

I'm only half joking
