sachmo55 Verified Member Posted May 24, 2013 Posted May 24, 2013 Well yeah the starting pitching is the main problem and they should all be ashamed of their performance so far but the JPA/Rasmus/Lawrie/Bonafacio axis of underachievement aren't exactly helping things much. JPA could be part of that problem too
Metallijay Verified Member Posted May 24, 2013 Posted May 24, 2013 JPA could be part of that problem too Starting to think so.
IronLadle Verified Member Posted May 24, 2013 Posted May 24, 2013 Arencibia had 151 total bases to Thole's 93 last year - Thole played more games
havok24 Old-Timey Member Posted May 24, 2013 Posted May 24, 2013 Historically awful season. 2BB:55K How can this even be real?

Arkadium Verified Member Posted May 24, 2013 Posted May 24, 2013 Reported for trolling. It's a pretty valid point.
Fearthedoc Verified Member Posted May 24, 2013 Posted May 24, 2013 What the hell is trolling? That has to be the biggest red flag for trolling I have ever seen in my life.
havok24 Old-Timey Member Posted May 24, 2013 Posted May 24, 2013 What the hell is trolling? I thought we were having a discussion "Thole only had 27 BB last year, I consider a HR the equivalent of 4 walks" lol
Dr Negative Verified Member Posted May 24, 2013 Posted May 24, 2013 At this rate Thole's 27 BB last year is going to be more than JPA will have in the rest of his career.
IronLadle Verified Member Posted May 24, 2013 Posted May 24, 2013 You can use any single counting stat to prove anything in that manner. Total Bases aren't a great stat. It's reaching in some way, but no worse than pitch framing
Arkadium Verified Member Posted May 24, 2013 Posted May 24, 2013 At this rate Thole's 27 BB last year is going to be more than JPA will have in the rest of his career. Wait... JPA's going to have a career? f***!

GD Old-Timey Member Posted May 24, 2013 Posted May 24, 2013 I'm sick of hearing about OBP, can't understand why people think it's the be all end all of stats Hey guys, look, Dwayne Murphy signed up! i still think JP is a great catcher offensively how many catchers can hit 30 home runs in a year? Go away. I'd prefer to hear about what better option we have than Arencibia This is REALLY generous. 0.85 fWAR/500 PA in his career. If you account for framing, that probably drops to 0 or lower. Funny you mention that, I've been absolutely obsessed with pitch framing lately, so I downloaded Fast's spreadsheet. He's worth -12.9 EstRuns, that's about 1.2 runs, right? And that's not even the most recent data, and his framing obviously hasn't gotten better.
GD Old-Timey Member Posted May 24, 2013 Posted May 24, 2013 It's reaching in some way, but no worse than pitch framing Why do you say this?
connorp Old-Timey Member Posted May 24, 2013 Posted May 24, 2013 This is REALLY generous. 0.85 fWAR/500 PA in his career. If you account for framing, that probably drops to 0 or lower. Well, if you look at it from when he came up I would be inclined to agree. But I looked it up when someone mentioned it on here and JPA is sitting in the middle of the pack for pitch framing this year. So you would be looking at him as a .85 fWAR/500 PA guy.. and again, for $500k that's not a franchise sinker. Up to the other players to step up. As far as his "cERA" having a lot to do with him (I didn't know you guys would go there).. I mean, MB for instance who makes $18m/year and has been around the league is going to let JPA dictate how the game is going to go? He's not going to shake him off whenever he wants?.. Same with JJ and the others.. it's a veteran staff and the gameplan on attacking the hitters is a team effort. Edit: I will admit Im a stats amateur though. I did see JPA in the middle of the pack after thehurl mentioned it but if theres data out there suggesting otherwise, I could be mistaken

IronLadle Verified Member Posted May 24, 2013 Posted May 24, 2013 because it depends on which umpire is behind the plate
GD Old-Timey Member Posted May 24, 2013 Posted May 24, 2013 I feel like we haven't seen anything yet. JPA's greatest troll job is yet to come. Picture it: the team goes on a run and wins 87 games. Finishes 2 wins back of the WC. JPA catches 140 games. Hits 32 homerz, drives in 85, but sets the record for worst K/BB of all time and finishes with a 0.298 wOBA. Framing metrics become widely accepted, and with them incorporated, JPA finishes with -1.5 WAR. AA praises JPA for his outstanding season and signs him to a multi-year extension. Best case scenario: JPA hits 37 dingerz, 90 ribeyes, AA gets fired, new and forward thinking GM trades JPA at peak value to dumn GM like Ned Colleti or whoever's running the Angels for a solid contributor, and the multiple years of Arencibia end on a not-s***** note. Yeah. From what I understand he's scored even worse than that on recent evaluations that weren't made public. Its entirely feasible that he's never had a season above replacement-level and is currently at like -3 WAR in his career. Would his framing numbers not be swayed by time missed last year? It's not unreasonable that if he had played a full season, he could actually be -4 or -5.
GD Old-Timey Member Posted May 24, 2013 Posted May 24, 2013 because it depends on which umpire is behind the plate No it doesn't, they're all s***.
Dr Negative Verified Member Posted May 24, 2013 Posted May 24, 2013 How is Iannetta's defense? He's a FA next year and I get the feeling that the Angels don't like him much.
IronLadle Verified Member Posted May 24, 2013 Posted May 24, 2013 No it doesn't, they're all s***. Are you telling me there is no variance for strike zones between different umpires?
GD Old-Timey Member Posted May 24, 2013 Posted May 24, 2013 How is Iannetta's defense? He's a FA next year and I get the feeling that the Angels don't like him much. Don't trust your gut, I'm pretty sure he got extended. Brian McCann or Ryan Hanigan please
GD Old-Timey Member Posted May 24, 2013 Posted May 24, 2013 Are you telling me there is no variance for strike zones between different umpires? No s*** there is, I was making a joke. However, I'd doubt the variance is large enough to make it more of a reach than what you suggested is. *I don't plan on backing up the variance claim lol

Captain Adama Old-Timey Member Posted May 24, 2013 Posted May 24, 2013 I have a strong feeling that IronLadle is related to Arencibia some way, or a horny broad who wants to be ravaged by him.
