so here's a question. Why don't the twins put Mauer back at catcher at this point? He is clearly not powerful enough (anymore) to justify being at 1B, but would have ok numbers for a catcher. If he gets hurt playing catcher, who cares? Its not like he's putting up monster numbers that you won't be able to live without.

That's a pretty good point. If he's still a 130+ wRC+ guy I understand why you'd want to protect him at 1B, but if he's a 100-115 wRC+ guy, just use him at C and if he gets hurt, he gets hurt.
