So if you want to move into a new year with bankable offensive production, you probably want most of your positions to be around 30, or a bit older.

 

You'd have to be the best drafter in the league by far + wait 5-10 years to get a studly offensive core that isn't around 30 years old on average.

Yeah. I learned that lesson the hard way this season when I penciled Gyorko and Bogaerts in for starting spots. Youth is nice, but it also comes with a higher likelihood of attrition, and trying to replace multiple bats midseason when 2-3 first or second year starters stumble a bit is pretty hard. I'm a lot more open to rostering 30+ year olds than I was two years ago.

Every team needs David Ortiz; the guy gets no respect. If Billy Muntler or Brandon Belt gave you 35/100 (in 142 games!), you'd be blowing them up big-time. I have absolutely no intention of trading David Ortiz, even if I could get Tyler Glasnow back for him. I fully intend to ride him until retirement, probably same goes for Pujols.

It kind of seems like a a down year around age-28-32 more often than not gets followed up by a bounce-back season when it's preceded by a lengthy track record of success. Take pretty much any great hitter and you can identify a season where someone would have sold low and missed out on like 5 more years of great production.
