Get in there Paul Stastny..... Jets Offense is soooo Deep right now if we can just land a depth dman i like what we have going into the playoffs

Not much said about this major deal. This is why St Louis is consistently good year after year. They make moves for the future even when 1 point out of playoffs.

I don’t know any of this because I don’t follow hockey in depth but I like to believe that Vegas being in first is a product of them exploiting the fact that most of the NHL is in the prehistoric age when it comes to sports analytics.

Imagine getting in a time machine and running a baseball expansion draft in the 70s with the sabermetric knowledge that we have right now about what makes players good. How good do you think your team could be?

Also- what do you homos think of Rick Nash these days? I’m having trouble seeing how he fits in Boston.

Is there evidence that Vegas leaned heavily on analytics when assembling their team? I don’t pay enough attention to know.

I have no idea if there’s evidence, but I do know that hockey GMs in general are dum

I have no idea what hockey analytics would consist of. I've had a difficult time trying to find anything online.

Really?

It’s all about possession and shot influence baby

Everything about hockey is dumb. Did you see the packages the hockey media were throwing around as being possible returns for Karlsson? It was like Point or Sergachev + multiple 1sts/prospects. That’s an insane return for 1.5 years of team control.

They've certainly had an amazing expansion draft and there's a s*** ton of guys on that team having career years, they could've saw this coming and are ahead of the curve.¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Or blind luck, lol.

The NHL is due for some type of revolution in how the sport is played. Some team will come along and roster 4 scoring lines and never dump the puck in. They'll sometimes pass back to the goalie. Or they'll pass back to the defence and just do 1 man line changes, so you can maintain possession. Or something like that.

The sport is very similar to soccer in terms of how valuable possession is. For example, if you have the ball or the puck as often as possible, you will have the best defence in the sport. If you shoot from far away and give up possession, it's a negative.

This is known in soccer but in hockey, people think blocking shots is the best defence. It's backwards. I mean, the Russians did have this figured out long ago and were effective because of this.

Some moneyball guy will emerge and he'll spend league minimum on a goalie and throw everything into 4 scoring lines. His team will have 75% possession. Give up 15 shots a game or something. Everyone will be exasperated.

Nah, hockey is way more intense than soccer...... too much lactic acid accumulation to allow what you suggest

The thing about shooting from far away and giving up possession doesn't strike me as strictly true, because in hockey with the velocity of shots and the unpredictability of the puck and the chance of tip-ins and deflections, point shots are dangerous enough things that you wouldn't want to just let them through. At least I'd want to see the math about it before telling my players to stop blocking shots.

My favourite possible hockey adaptation would be to never draft defenseman. The defensemen as we know them go extinct. I'd only care about offensive forwards and two-way centremen. I'd take my excess/failed/bigger forwards and just make them play defense. My defensive squad would all play like Karlsson/Krug/Ellis/Gardiner.

My thinking with point shots is that simply retaining possession instead of shooting might have a more positive effect on your goals against than the point shot would have on your goals for.

Also, I would love to see a team drop their point men out of the zone to allow more time on the puck during a cycle. Say your 4th line is cycling, but you know they can't score. So you drop a point man and make a long pass backwards. Then you get the nearest 4th liner off the ice and get Matthews on.

Haha if teams actually started doing that en masse, you'd probably see rule changes. I can imagine it being quite boring. But you're probably right, it's better than just grinding for 20 seconds and losing the puck.

Surely giving your own team possession at your own net (playing it back and changing 4 players) is better than giving the other team possession at their net (dump and change!)

You guys seem to know so much, why aren't you GMs instead of talking on an off-topic section of a baseball board? The stuff you're suggesting...your team's cardio and skating ability would need to be through the roof. Plus try and pull this drop pass crap and all the league needs to do is re-implement the center ice off-side rule and your team is DOA as the opponents can rush you on every change with near impunity.

Strong point. Sorry for talking about hockey in a weird way.

I'll go back to complaining about goalie interference calls.

Dammit. You're too damn passive. I'm hankering for a fight but the politics thread is ruined, and the Blue Jays' FO is consistently making the correct and universally beloved moves so there's no debate to be had there either.

lol... Ryan Reaves:

“I’m not going to apologize for any one of those penalties,” Reaves said. “They did cost us the game but that’s my style of play. I bring energy, I bring physicality and that’s going to continue against every team we play.”

These idiot goons are a big reason I can't stand hockey. This f***ing guy PUNCHED A GUY IN THE BACK OF THE HEAD and then said him getting a penalty was a bad call.

How in the f*** is punching a guy in the back of the head for no reason ever a defensible move in any sport? Then he said he only got a penalty because Doughty is a huge pussy.

Christ.

I was at a game last week and someone threw a clean, open ice hit on a guy carrying the puck. A player on the other team skated over, dropped the gloves, and started punching him in the head. Both players get 2 minute minors for the scrum. Why hockey is s***, in one 10-second sequence - player A makes a legal play, separating the puck carrier from the puck, player B starts punching him in the head, and referees think that both players deserve equal punishment.

I guess the main takeaway is that hockey is run by, played by, officiated by and revered by people who aren't very smart.

THat happens every single time in basketball as well.player A assaults player B, player B defends himself and they either both get tossed or receive calls

Serge Ibaka has been punched and thrown out of 3 games this year because he didn’t just stand there and walk away after being punched in the face

They'll send her packing like they did with Hazel when she's past her prime

No s***, as do all media, in any position. She'll leave NESN for better pastures, herself.
