National Hockey League: Why isn't it the Toronto Maple Leaves instead of Leafs?

Dave Hogg, Freelance sportswriter in Detroit. I work for the Associated Press and Fox Sports Detroit on a regular basi...

Answered Oct 15 2013

Because they were named after the Maple Leaf regiment of the Canadian Army. Since Maple Leaf is a proper noun, the correct plural is Maple Leafs, not Maple Leaves.

Please do not provide facts. Boxy isn't interested.

After the Leafs hot start I started seeing articles referring to them as Cup favourites. I’m enjoying this fall immensely.

So they lost? Trying to gauge my jump on the bandwagon. Do I need to wait a few more years?

Leafs need to bounce back against the Blues. McElhinney didn’t look too solid. If he keeps it up, Sparks or Pickard could take over as back up in the New Year. Also, what’s up with Price? 3.77 GAA, 877 SV%.

I wish i didn't have to hate on the Leafs but when you have other Canadian Teams like the Jets, and Sens having strong starts but you turn on the sports and all you hear is about how good the leafs are it makes it f***ing tough..... BTW f*** the Leafs go Jets.

It's funny that you and BTS don't get that the media speaks to the masses. Toronto is the biggest Canadian city by far. The Leafs have the largest fanbase by far. They're not going to spend the majority of their time on teams that have a fraction of the viewership. That's stupid business. You two probably complain that the Jays don't get any respect either... And it's for the same reason. Nobody in the States gives a s*** about the Jays. Only a select few give a s*** about the Jets or Sens.

I don't really understand this. Was Turris not willing to sign that same deal to stay in Ottawa? Hopefully the Senators can work out a long-term extension with Duchene.

Yeah seemsI can u like a lot to give up. I mean Duchene is better but I don't think the upgrade is worth the assets they gave up. If Duchene signs that same deal I like it but he's going to want more $.

I would have rather just signed Turris for 6/36. Hell they should have just traded for Duchene and kept Turris which would have made them a legit contender.

From what I’ve read the contract negotiations with Turris weren’t the smoothest. I think it’s a good move for the Sens, they kept their top prospects and Duchene is younger, and more of a game breaker (IMO) than Turris.

Like the deal for Colorado. Shed salary and pick up a shitload of futures. Possible suitor for Tavares next offseason

I think it’s a good deal for Colorado as well, no way I see Tavares going there though.
