Zaun of the Dead Verified Member Posted July 2, 2016 Posted July 2, 2016 Shouldn't they be trying to add players who are actually good? The obvious concern here is that they think Martin and Russell are good. well for one, they haven't even signed russell. so I am not even worried about him. The way they are looking to add talent right now is through the draft. Which so far, it looks like they have had success. They are using the free agent market to sign small complementary pieces that won't take away roles from the young studs. they have to see what they got, and they're not going to have as much of an idea what they have by bringing in free agent 2nd and 3rd liners that the kids would be playing behind. And just because they signed Martin, doesn't mean they think he's GOOD. It means they think there is a role on this team for him in Toronto. Which there may be, as there is a definitive lack of toughness on this team. A line with Komarov / Laich / Martin might be a good fit.
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted July 2, 2016 Posted July 2, 2016 Panthers and Preds having really good offseasons.

Why would you give Martin a 4 year deal and 10 mil. if you don't think he's good? And if you are signing someone who's bad at hockey for that contract just to throw hits around then I've got even worse news...
King Old-Timey Member Posted July 2, 2016 Posted July 2, 2016 And if they think Matt Martin is good at hockey some talent evaluation obviously went amiss here. So in summary, - The Leafs think Matt Martin is good at hockey and give him 10 mill. - The Leafs think Matt Martin is bad at hockey and give him 10 mill. to fill a tough guy role. Neither of these are good.
Cyborg Verified Member Posted July 2, 2016 Posted July 2, 2016 Panthers have fully embraced analytics I love it. Love the Marchessault signing but Reimer, Demers, and Yandle signings are too much for too long.
Zaun of the Dead Verified Member Posted July 2, 2016 Posted July 2, 2016 I shouldn't have said they don't think he's good. They think he is good at a specific playing style that will help the team. As for the term, I think it's pretty inconsequential. They can buy him out at any time.

King Old-Timey Member Posted July 2, 2016 Posted July 2, 2016 Logan Stanley. *mic drop* Yeah that was bad too.
P2F Old-Timey Member Posted July 2, 2016 Posted July 2, 2016 Yeah that was bad too. I'm just kidding, King. Your Leafs points are spot on. It was an egregious move to give Martin $10MM.
Cyborg Verified Member Posted July 2, 2016 Posted July 2, 2016 Again for reference, here is my latest hockey GAR for last year and previous seasons. I have calculated about $0.4M/GAR. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1xKtPSEkw0nMMF-uXAsXHIz-cUKjxv8OYyiVJYOUbifU/edit?usp=sharing - Weber was 42nd in the league (21 GAR, $8.4M) and 2nd best Dman behind Giordano last year while Subban was replacement (-0.08) (!). Subban was much better in 2014 though (19 GAR, $7.6M). - Loui Eriksson (32.2, $12.9M) was second to only Ovechkin (36.3, $14.5M) in GAR last year. Could be a nice deal for Canucks. - Hall (13.7, $5.5M) was 135th in the league and Larsson (6.2, $2.5M) was 336th. - Matt Martin had 5.4 GAR ($2.2M worth) last year. - Connor McDavid was the best player in the league by rate stats!
canadiansportsjunkie Verified Member Posted July 2, 2016 Posted July 2, 2016 Nothing wrong with the Martin signing at all he is the guy I wanted slightly too much money maybe 500k / year and one to many years. The deal for Anderson was solid and we haven't even signed Russel ( I hope they don't )
Zaun of the Dead Verified Member Posted July 2, 2016 Posted July 2, 2016 our blueline is already crowded with mediocrity as it is.
canadiansportsjunkie Verified Member Posted July 2, 2016 Posted July 2, 2016 Our D is not even terrible....we are missing a #1 but they are hard to find typically have to develop one. Next draft seems loaded with good D so who knows!
Zaun of the Dead Verified Member Posted July 2, 2016 Posted July 2, 2016 Leafs signed Roman Polak for one year. definitely not signing Russell now.
Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted July 2, 2016 Posted July 2, 2016 Leafs signed Roman Polak for one year. definitely not signing Russell now. 2 more 2nd rounders at the deadline please

Zaun of the Dead Verified Member Posted July 2, 2016 Posted July 2, 2016 2 more 2nd rounders at the deadline please one can only hope!!
havok24 Old-Timey Member Posted July 3, 2016 Posted July 3, 2016 Eww why? This feels like something out of the Burke/Nonis era. Gross.
GD Old-Timey Member Posted July 3, 2016 Author Posted July 3, 2016 So Dubas and Hunter get the draft and literally nothing else I see
Zaun of the Dead Verified Member Posted July 4, 2016 Posted July 4, 2016 I have no qualms with Corrado as a 7th / 3rd pairing D.
Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted July 8, 2016 Posted July 8, 2016 Jonathan Bernier traded to Anaheim for a conditional pick in 2017. Nice.
BTS Community Moderator Posted July 15, 2016 Posted July 15, 2016 Al Strachan tweeting about Tavares coming home to Toronto. You idiots get to spend the next two years penciling him into your hypothetical lineups before he ultimately signs an extension in New York!

But our team will be that much better in 2 years that he'd have to sign! /sarcasm
