nobody was able to answer my question, but would it not be a good idea for the Leafs to plan on being a cap team during their rebuild? Do you not think a team could get a decent return by taking on bad contracts for prospects?

 

Most other bad teams want to keep the payroll near the floor because they aren't going to have big revenues during the rebuild. Leafs don't have the problem. I'd have to think there would be a laundry list of teams that would jump at the chance to sell a bad contract at the costs of a prospect or pick (then spend that money on someone else)

 

Same thing with Kessel, Phaneuf, Clarkson if you can keep some of the cap hit when you trade a player (why I asked the original question). They would command a much bigger return if they didn't come with the same cap hit.

Might work in some cases. A proper rebuild takes 3-4 years so I wouldn't want to take on anything longer. Leafs are probably already stuck with their own bad contracts.

Gaudreau has played 55 games with top 6 minutes and has yet to take a penalty. Letestu is closest at 26 games on the season without a penalty.

 

Similarly, last year Ryan O'Reily played 80 games of regular minutes and finished with only 2 PIMs for the season.

Considering the situation, I like the return. Leipsic seems to be a pretty decent prospect (Brendan Gallagher type), and the late 1st round pick is decent. However, I'm not happy by the way the Leafs got to this point. They f***ed around with Franson for far too long. At least now with him and Santo gone, it should increase this team's chances of a top 5 pick.

Meh, even if we had a good relationship with Franson, if we locked him up he'd decline before our window. Trade probably happens either way.

Rumour was that Santorelli was drawing late 2nd, early 3rd offers...Leipsic would be much more than that at this point.

From playing on a first place team with Stanley Cup aspirations to one of the worst teams in the league, I think anyone would be upset lol. Olli really stunk it up in Nashville though so he had to see this coming in terms of either being traded or released.

I am stoked on the trade. A pretty decent return for only a few months of 2 players. Hopefully Leipsic becomes a contributor in the future and we can package Jokinen for some quality pieces coming back.

not jokinen by himself obviously, but with a winnik or a bozak could definitely get some kind of return. you think jokinen is sticking around? hell no.
