This is why I laughed when people were predicting a fall for the NYY before the season due to their age and injuries. I'll believe it when I see it. The stupid thing is, they're doing it with a lineup full of ex-Blue Jays and crap like Eduardo Nunez (now injured himself) and Chris Stewart. And ancient players: people were making fun of Ramon Ortiz's age the other day before his start, but he's younger than both Pettitte and Rivera.

If the Jays were throwing that lineup out there they'd probably be terrible. And people would be saying no wonder, it's full of old guys and has beens and never weres.

To me it starts with pitching and solid defense, having both of these components will keep you in games. Now, they've certainly gotten surprising offensive production out of Wells, Overbay and others no doubt.

I was thinking though, given what they've gotten out of Wells, etc, could they have gotten more out of the guys they're replacing both on O and D?

We'll have to wait and see.

As expected, the Rockies called up outfielder Charlie Blackmon from Triple-A Colorado Springs on Sunday to take the roster spot of outfielder/first baseman Michael Cuddyer, who was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a bulging disk in his neck.

The real question is, what will their OF look like when Granderson returns? Wells or Ichiro have to sit(Gardner's staying in CF), Francisco will be DFA'd.

so manny machado is pretty much a superstar already. That happened fast.

.362 BABIP?

Even when that regresses to .310-.320, still superstar numbers. Not striking out, hitting for power, lacing liners all over the field, sublime defense, and chipping in some speed.

Edgar Gonzalez was garbage in Toronto--he's even worse in Houston. He's given up 2 HR and 4 runs on 5 hits in 1 inning. Of course, Jordan Lyles was even worse, giving up 8 runs. Texas leads 12-1.

How do you personally define superstar? 5+ WAR?

For a 20 year old? Hell yes.

Then yeah the kid's a superstar. Just that there's always the inherent possibility of regression.

8 shutout innings on only 88 pitches for Brandon McCarthy, but Kirk Gibson goes to Heath Bell in the 9th, who promptly blows the save.

Heath Bell has actually been really damn good this year. 2.12 xFIP. If he weren't getting paid so damn much I'd love to have him. Apparently the Marlins tried to f*** with his mechanics or something last year and he struggled but with a 6.67 K:BB, he's obviously improving.

Was watching this game, hilarious. Fatcow really needed the win, he's devastated.

Lol

I like Brandon McCarthy, but I can't help but enjoy anything that contributes to the failure of fatcow's fantasy team. He is still winning this week though.

Didn't actually realize that. Obviously worth noting the SSS though.

Yes, obviously, but he's a good reliever. I don't expect a 2.12 xFIP for the entire year lol but I'd say he's probably 'back,' so to speak.

I really wish people who don't quite know how to apply the term "regression" in baseball vernacular would stop using it. It doesn't mean what you think it means in the context you just used it. The word you are looking for is "retrogress."

Does Fangraphs have a baseball terminology section or something that I haven't seen? If I'm using the word wrong then I'd like to know the difference between the two and a baseball dictionary so to speak would be nice.

So, regression is the moving of statistics towards a mean, and retrogression is a decline in talent level but not necessarily towards a particular mean, correct?

IN baseball terms.. yes.

Yes, in baseball terms. Alright, thanks, I'll try to use these correctly from now on.
