The Marlins had Cabrera on the trade market, and the Angels offered Howie Kendrick, Jeff Mathis and either Ervin Santana or Nick Adenhart. But the Marlins wanted both Santana and Adenhart, and the Angels changed their minds about dealing Kendrick, and the trade fell through. Had the deal worked out (and had Cabrera agreed to a long-term deal, the way he eventually did with the Tigers), Cabrera could have joined with fellow 2012 MVP candidate Mike Trout.

But I'd say that if you have a guy as talented as Miggy or Upton on the market, you take the star every time. It's very rare that both prospects in such high-profile deals will reach their ceiling. At the time I was saying they should do it, and said so too when we were close to acquiring Latos and Greinke.

 

I'm not sure how highly regarded Kendrick was at the time, but I know that Mathis wasn't that valuable, and I (was... that's just painful to type) a big Adenhart fan and I know he was a good prospect but not a special one or anything. Not sure on Santana.

 

Who have we missed out on recently? Greinke, Upton, Latos, Gonzalez, who else?

Well yah, considering it was thought that Snider's ceiling was basically Upton and Drabek's ceiling was a top end #2 (by his inflated prospect rankings anyways). If it was likely they reached their ceilings, it's obviously a stupid thing to do.

 

But they don't have to reach their absolute ceilings to make it a bad deal either. Upton is probably a true talent 3.5-4 WAR guy who's not really that cheap anymore going forward. He's not someone you empty the farm for. He's not close to a Trout/Harper.

 

Regardless, I do remember you advocating taking the proven young MLB stud side of the deals in the past. Nothing wrong with that as long as it's reasonable.

Peavy, who's having a monster year. Kenny Williams supposedly decided not to do it and re-sign Peavy instead, but I wonder if AA could've added another prospect and gotten it done.

 

That was the other mega-trade. Apparently the salary impact was similar so I think there's a decent enough chance we would have had to take on John Danks and Gavin Floyd and other s***** options. JJ + Dickey + Reyes + Buehrle still > Peavy.

 

Oh, right; Tim Lincecum. The Alex Rios deal that wasn't.

I know, but those guys weren't uber-prospects at the time of the trade. Only Phillips was ever ranked a top 100 guy by BA while in the Expos system.

Nah, he still had some value. A 5.17 ERA in 2007 wasn't that bad, and his walk spike wasn't nearly what it was for Romero. I remember at the time the Tigers were expecting both Cabrera and Willis to be stars for them. Willis was still a big deal.

 

I'd consider that ERA pretty f***ing bad lol but I've only been following baseball seriously since '08 so I'll take your word for this.

True talent .400 wOBA (according to ZIPs) 24 year olds who also happen to be plus defenders are things that I would have a very hard time trading.
