    One idea I just had was to look up whether Kirk's been victimized by a lot of excellent defensive plays from opposition fielders. Sure enough he features 19th place among qualified hitters in MLB in the Statcast leaderboard with 4 outs above average produced on his batted balls. That can explain some of the discrepancy between his expected statistics and batted ball results. On a related Blue Jays note Andres Gimenez has been absolutely robbed by opposition fielders with 8 OAA against him from opposition fielders. Kirk has been hitting the ball very hard to all fields. To the pull side he's averaged 94.3 MPH, to the middle of the field he's averaged 93.6 MPH, and to the opposite field he's averaged 90.2 MPH. I suspect that Kirk is suffering from hitting too many deep fly balls to the deepest parts of the park but that's not something that I've looked up.

    I believe that Santander is expected to return to swinging a bat before too much longer so the team should be able to get a better read on his potential availability closer to the trade deadline. Hopefully the shoulder issue isn't something that saps his power as he doesn't have a ton to offer aside from parking the ball in the seats.

    I'd be happy to see Kirk selling out a little more for pull side power, but at the same time I'm also very happy with what he's being doing at the plate as he's returned to the type of middle of the order bat he featured in the 2022 breakout season. I had a look at his batted ball numbers, and he doesn't tend to produce very well when he hits the ball up the middle as evidenced by a 32 wRC+ on balls hit to the middle of the field. His air results (line drives + fly balls) in center field indicate that he's been comically unlucky on these types of batted balls as evidenced by a .582 xwOBA/.242 wOBA split. I can't help but feel he'd be well served to add a bit of pull side line drives/fly balls to his approach as he's received far closer to the type of results the expected stats indicate with a more neutral .657 xwOBA/.745 wOBA split.

    It's a tricky question about adding a starter. This would likely force Lauer into a swingman role, and he's been the steadiest member of the rotation once the team moved him there full time. Scherzer's health is going to be a lingering question mark for the rest of the season and it would be prudent for the team to add another capable arm and figure out the pecking order for the rotation if/when another started is acquired.

    Out of Angels relievers I'd love to see the team target Detmers. He features the type of stuff that really plays in the post season, but as a player who is under team control for 3 more seasons he's bound to be very expensive to acquire.

    Suarez's bat would be a tremendous addition but he's a really imperfect fit for this roster. If/when Santander is ready to return that would create a monster logjam at the DH position. Both of Santander and Springer should be everyday players and each is best suited at DH due to declining defense. Barger needs to be in the lineup close to every day but this would serve to erode the available playing time for him. I think the team is well served with 3B positions with players on the roster, and there are a lot of high end DH options on the roster at present with all of Springer, Kirk, Vlad and eventually Santander being able to capably fill the position.

    As bad as he's been for much of the season Green came up huge in the Yankees series and in last night's game. I'd still prefer him to be the last leverage option in the bullpen who is primarily used when better options are unavailable, but it is a bonus that he has been justifying his continued employment in recent outings.

    I've seen it suggested in various online venues that Edward Cabrera of the Marlins may be available in trade. I think he's a more realistic get than Peralta given how mediocre the Marlins have been this season. I had a look at his pitch mix in Statcast and he features an interesting blend. Oddly enough his upper 90's 4 seamer and sinker are by far his worse pitches as they are each hit very hard. Based on the heat maps it appears as this is largely due to poor command with too many center cut fastballs. Cabrera features two elite secondary pitches in his slider and curveball which have garnered 45% and 40% whiff rates respectively. One thing that stood out was that Statcast has him throwing a 94 MPH changeup which has been far more effective than either of his fastballs, so he could be better off largely shelving the fastballs in favor of a slider/curveball/changeup mix.

    Welcome to the board. I'm a huge Kirk fan, but truthfully he brings so much more to the table defensively other than just framing as he's 100th percentile in blocking runs and 97th percentile in Statcast runs. I believe he's head and tails above all other catchers defensively in MLB this season but he may be robbed of a gold glove because it seems that DRS is heavily weighted in the gold glove criteria and Kirk isn't leading the DRS board based on a bogus catcher's ERA statistic. Oh the topic of Heineman I don't think there should be any fear of him failing a PED test. He's been the luckiest hitter in MLB based on his highest in MLB .086 wOBA-xwOBA split this season. His results are trending downwards as expected based on regression to the mean as evidenced by a 91 wRC+ over the last 2+ months of the season.

    Gimenez collected 5 hits and a walk in his 2 games in the leadoff spot so that's a perfectly fine choice as well.

    That series seemed to have acted as a bit of a launching off point for the team. Since the last game of that series they've ripped off a second best in MLB 33-18 run.

    I wouldn't necessarily frame the earlier series against the Angels as some kind of beatdown. The Angels took 2 of 3 games, but one of the victories was by a single run as that was the first game where Hoffman surrendered 3 runs in a third of an inning.

    He was finally on his way to a better start last night but the game was suspended after the second inning.

    To be perfectly fair he quietly ripped off a 148 wRC+ from mid April until the end of June. He hasn't gotten as hot as he's capable but with the improved defense and baserunning he's still been a solid contributor to the club.

    It was mentioned on a recent broadcast that someone in the pen was battling through some sort of injury issue so an IL stint could be possible.

    I disagree completely. A healthy and productive Santander would be a massive addition to the middle of the lineup. I can think of few better ways to complete ruin the relationship with a player than to attempt to force him to remain on the injured list after he's healthy and ready to return.

    That's surprising they allowed Santander to try to play through the issue. It was apparent he was a shadow of his usual self and wasn't even able to swing the bat with his usual intensity. He offers no defensive value and isn't a great contact hitter so if he isn't able to club fingers he doesn't have much to offer.

    The first time the Jays played the Yankees was during that awful 4-12 stretch so hopefully with the team playing much better over the last 7 weeks this series will turn out differently. The Jays have been performing very well in their limited plate appearances vs left handed pitching so hopefully they can at least take one of the first two games of the series.

    This isn't nearly the type of gotcha response that you think it is. The correct answer is I'd want neither of these guys hitting with the game on the line in the 9th inning. The team employs multiple better options on the bench to pinch hit in this type of situation.

    I'm not referring to this season only. I think Rojas has always been a bit unheralded compared to other arms in the system throughout his entire time in the organization.

    I hardly think it's worth worrying about who is hitting in the 7-9 spots in the lineup.

    It feels like Rojas has gone a little under the radar compared to other arms in the system. Hopefully he can finally find a way to remain healthy as the injuries have sapped so much of his developmental time.

    Macko's 2-2/3 inning/8 ER outing likely didn't help his chances either.

    When you start to get to your 8th depth starter options and beyond beggars can't be choosers.
