  1. FWIW the exact quote is: "We have some young players that have not realized their full potential yet. Whether that’s Brandon Drury, Billy McKinney, Derek Fisher, Teoscar Hernandez, there’s a group of guys we feel are going to continue to get better and be good major-league talent for some time to come. There’s a lot of upside to our roster and being patient, we feel, will really pay off in the end. That’s the one thing that limits some of the flexibility that is being talked about." That suggests to me they aren't looking to add to the outfield, which IMO is a mistake.
  2. You could say exactly the same about Pannone, but yeah it worries me that Atkins specifically referenced McKinney when talking about giving players time to improve in the majors.
  3. Billy McKinney!
  4. True but Valera is just so uninspiring, haha. I mean unless he has a Sogard type breakthrough, there's little chance he lasts the season on the 40 man with having no options left, and currently being in AAA.
  5. I'd be happy with Espinal being the infield cover with both Urena and Valera DFA. Might as well give him a shot.
  6. TBH as long as major deals are done before spring training (and I agree that potentially something needs to be done to facilitate that) I don’t think it really matters too much. If most transactions were done before the new year there would be a big gap before the season starts. A connected but bigger problem is that there are too many teams that won’t be making exciting deals at any point in the offseason.
  7. Yes you are being pessimistic. It's true the young core is mostly potential, but there's a hell of a lot of it! Vlad is a few adjustments away from being a superstar. Bo has started excellently. Jansen only needs to be ok with the bat to be very good. Those 3 alone are more promising (partly because they are already in the majors) than anything the majority of rebuilding teams have. When you add in McGuire, Gurriel, Biggio, Pearson, the glut of AAA starters competing for a rotation spot, and tonnes of payroll flexibility, it's not hard to imagine competing as early as 2021.
  8. Putting the work in, good to see. His diet is going to be the real kicker though - will he break the bad habits of a lifetime? FWIW he still looks fat in the videos. Even so, an encouraging start.
  9. You should lose your mod status, you are clearly insane.
  10. I can't believe we traded a MVP calibre player away! /s
  11. Or maybe he's just an *******!
  12. It's not an either or. It's not just the player picked, it's about $1.5m draft slot money given up, limiting the flexibility with picking players in later rounds. If this front office has done one thing undeniably well it's drafting. Limiting their flexibility is therefore not smart. A mid range free agent like Odorizzi is not going to make the difference between making the playoffs next year or not. A mid range free agent like Odorizzi is not going to make the difference between World Series or not, in a few years when we are competing. I don't think anyone is saying we can't possible sign anyone with a QO or that it'd be a disaster if we did. Anyone saying there is no discernible impact to signing a free agent with a QO attached is wrong. Did I miss anything?
  13. I wonder how much of an impact Ben has on roster moves. It'll be good when his position is resolved anyway.
  14. While it wouldn't be the end of the world, giving up the pick's slot value limits the draft strategy for a team. It's not a coincidence that mid range players who receive a QO often struggle to get what they want in free agency.
  15. I do think it puts off new posters when any discussion over different opinions usually dissolves into name calling. But yeah you're probably right that strict moderation is a bit too far (and we don't have enough active mods to implement it anyway).
  16. bWAR. Verlander = 7.8 (1st in MLB). Cole = 6.9 (4th in AL).
  17. Amen. When the kind of person who tries to ‘win’ arguments in real life by shouting the loudest doesn’t have a valid counter argument they go straight to the lower levels of the hierarchy of disagreement. A ban of levels 6 and 7 would promote discussion but you’d have to cope with the “fReE sPeACh!!” complaints!
  18. Steroids are illegal outside of sports. Surely you understand why some substances are illegal and some legal right?
  19. It’s debatable whether this risk averse front office would want to ‘overpay’ for a top end free agent anyway. But when we’d have to blow away the competition with extra years/aav, it’s not going to happen.
  20. What the f*** are you talking about? If we offered $18m more than anyone else you wouldn’t consider that an extra premium? What?? It’s pretty simple, if we had something to offer other than money then if multiple teams make similar offers the player may decide to pick us. As we don’t, the player will not. I can’t see how you are not getting that.
