  1. VAR (i.e. video replay) has been implemented so badly in the Premier League. Offside is meant to prevent an unfair advantage for the attacker. But players are getting called for having their hand an inch in front of the defender. Lots of incidents over the Xmas period, it has to be changed.
  2. Jeter joined in 2017 and decided to go full rebuild immediately, condemning the MLB team to years of losing and low attendances, with the aim of repairing the farm and competing. It's going to plan for him i.e. the MLB team is losing but it doesn't matter because the farm is much better and that's been the priority. Absolutely they've been terribly managed before Jeter got there, but right now they are 100% on track with what he's trying to do. We won't know if it works out for a few years though, as mentioned above.
  3. Lol I literally said the opposite!
  4. Yes that’s right one of the best - a top ten system with numerous top 100 prospects. Unquestionably vastly improved from the empty farm they had before they started the full tear down (which has at least 2 years left of adding to the farm being prioritised over winning at the MLB level). I.e. their plan is fully on track. As you say, prospects are unreliable so we won’t know if the full rebuild strategy was the correct one for a few years yet. Though the current MLB 26 man has negligible impact on that.
  5. TBF Miami are only just about to enter year 3 of a full tear down and rebuild. The major league team isn't very relevant compared to their farm - which has been built up from one of the worst to one of the best.
  6. You're half right in that it won't happen! The Red Sox had a better roster last year than ours would be with those additions and didn't make the playoffs. We'd still have a lot riding on a high injury risk rotation, an unproven young core, and a dodgy outfield.
  7. I’d like Espinal (who was protected from the rule 5 draft) to be the back up middle infielder ahead of Urena/Valera. But yeah we have enough infield players now.
  8. It'll be interesting to see who has the better season!
  9. Drury (and Shaw FWIW) both have an option left too.
  10. Do you mean that because Shaw is left handed he'll be in the lineup every day? Because if so then having EE tie up the DH is even worse. Sorry I might be misunderstanding your point.
  11. Unless the front office is giving up on Tellez (though there’s an argument they should do) EE makes no sense now. I’m hoping this means Drury’s days are numbered - without his defensive value at 3B he’s even more useless.
  12. Only just seen this: Play in for the 7/8th seeds seems pointless. Reseeding final four is an overdue move. In season tournament could be fun if the teams take it seriously - all European sports have multiple trophies to play for in a season.
  13. Kirby Yates is the perfect example of why relievers are so volatile - up until 2 years ago he had a negative career WAR. Even if Giles avoids injury (which would be a risk even if he didn't have elbow issues last year) there's still a good chance he stops being elite relatively soon. The list of elite relievers who decline in their early 30's is extensive. IMO Giles is not the player you take a risk on, especially when he's the last valuable veteran trade asset left.
  14. We don't need an elite closer this season and there's a good chance Giles won't be elite anymore in a few years. Giles trade value is as an elite reliever with one year of control for all in teams looking to compete this year. Saying that, if Atkins holds on to Giles until the deadline, he gets injured and we get nothing, then that would be a disaster. We should be aggressively shopping him until a reasonable offer is made.
  15. The Giles trade is so important. Don't f*** it up Atkins!
  16. Yeah fans have no patience, we should just be thankful that it looks like we’ll avoid a full scale tear down with years and years of rebuilding from nothing like Miami or Baltimore fans have to endure. If the majority of the core continues to develop we’ll be in a great position as early as next year. If the majority of the core fails then we wouldn’t be making the playoffs anytime soon even if we had massively overpaid to get the likes of Wheeler and Ryu to come here.
  17. It’s such a North American attitude that sports should be run as a business. Sports should provide entertainment (which the Rays fail at, TBF mostly due to factors outside their direct control), and success (which the Rays also fail at, zero World Series titles due in part to prioritising low payroll over spending on areas of need).
  18. - Hernandez probably has more value and chance of a long term future with the team as a DH/1B vs CF. - Gurriel can't be locked in as a full time outfielder after only 3 months of playing there (and if he was used as a super utility player that'd potentially help the infield) - If Grichuk doesn't bounce back to a 1.5-2 WAR player he can be on the bench. If he repeats last year he can be DFA, it's 'only' $28m after this upcoming season as his contract was front loaded. - Fisher should be on a very short leash. - The time to give Alford a shot was last season, but might as well see what he does in Spring Training. - McKinney can f*** off.
  19. We (better) be losing Giles from the bullpen soon, but the usual vet signings and random reliever pitching well for a year, added to the 2 or 3 relievers we'll likely get from the starters who don't remain starters, will fill out the bullpen nicely. Our outfield, and our cover infield (Urena, Drury and Valera = worst in the league) are bigger factors on limiting our win total IMO.
  20. Yeah plus there will be other pitchers who raise their stock with good seasons, we'll still have lots of payroll space, and hopefully we'll be a more attractive destination with the development of the core and our prospects.
