The only logical reason and its not smart. They plan to play Zeke everyday and don't want to use Pompey as the 4th Outfielder because he needs to play everyday. What should have happened is Pompey came up to play everyday and Zeke continued in his 4th OF role.

The only way a team could avoid using an option is putting him on the DL but they would have to activate him and option him at some point.

They already used his 2016 option. He doesn't need to play a major league game if he's already on the 40-man roster.
