Marner is nominated for the Selke this season so clearly he's a good defensive forward already (in the regular season).. Matthews is a very good defensive centre. Nylander is quite poor defensively. His biggest defensive asset is his ability to strip the puck away from the opposition (when he's in the mood).

Leafs were a Top 5-6 defensive team this year. Do you consider the Leafs goaltending Top 5-6? I sure as hell don't. A great defensive system can certainly make a goalie look good but I don't think it's a steadfast rule. Regardless. Wherever you look on this roster, there are problems.

Until pen is put to paper, it's all just talk to keep the fans on his side. Boras knows what works and what fans will eat up.

Tavares has a full NMC. Marner and Matthews both have full NMCs that kick in on July 1st, so if they are serious about moving one of those guys, they will likely need to do it before then. Nylander has a 10 team NTC...I believe that list gets submitted on July 1st also. Nylander has one year left on his deal at a very attractive cap hit so he's most likely the one if they want to shake it up. But I'm not really sure that's enough. They save $6.9m by moving Nylander out. Is that enough to change the entire makeup of this team? Unless they can find a coach that's able to get through to them. Personally...I think they need to find an elite goalie. Hellebuyck might be available. Not sure who else could be a good fit, but this group has never had a goalie that can steal games or an entire series. They've been going with mediocre to average goaltending and hoping the team plays great in front. They don't. This team constantly makes idiotic blunders... And they don't have a guy that will bail them out. They haven't since Belfour/Cujo. Haven't developed a guy like that since they drafted Potvin in '90. They had Rask but..... To me, getting a "TRUE" #1 goalie is the most important addition. My guess is they run it back with Samsonov and Woll though. Unless the organization fires everyone and decides to go scorched earth.

What you see from a lot of teams in the playoffs is that they play desperate and with a chip on their shoulder. Leafs play scared and entitled.
