    Such a dumb decision and now he's paying for it hard.

    It's amazing how quickly his skills declined out there and he did it all to himself trying to get Demon Young at first last April. He really had one of the most feared arms of RF up to that point and totally f***ed himself because of anger issues. It's kind of surprising that incident doesn't get brought up more.

    You could argue it's a bad signing as a first basemen sure, but I don't see how it impacts EE's DH role other than spending $4MM annual.

    Why does everyone assume signing Smoak means no EE? Smoak hasn't been his replacement up to this point so I don't see how that changes, EE is not very good at 1B and can't possibly do that over the course of a season. If anything it suggests Bautista is gone who would most certainly would be the future 1B.

    Martin is hitting better than Lucroy right now, they don't need to shore up anything. It's wasting money and prospects for little gain. You're heavily undervaluing Martin and highly overvaluing the role of a second catcher. Regardless, none of this is happening so it's not worth discussing & you can stop feeding the bait.

    Russell Martin 130 wRC+ in June 122 wRC+ in July We were getting below replacement level production from him for the first what, 6 weeks? I think he was playing through an injury, I know he had major neck problems as well and he seems to have sorted things out. They couldn't possibly rely on Thole so he played through it but probably needed to be on the DL.

    Unless their trade partner is Dave Stewart, I really don't see what Colabello could bring us in the offseason, a throw in at best?? I'm not undervaluing Carerra, I think him and Pompey together could make for a great bench / RF option. Swap out Burns & Lake with Bautista & Pompey and I think we're stronger everywhere. When Saunders hits that double in a tie game in the 8th, putting Pompey out there would be wonderful. Sadly, as you mentioned I don't think Gibby has the balls to move to Bautista to 1B / DH role though.

    Gibby will want to give him a chance, that I believe hence the gibby comment but I don't think it's the right move. I believe a caught PED user who was respected because he beat the odds can just GTFO regardless of his predicted minor contributions. They could release him today and I wouldn't care. If they want Colabello I think he'll be a September call up and they should bring up Pompey now so at the very least he'll be postseason eligible.

    Honestly, he'll probably hit well in AAA but that's aside the point. I think if they start relying on him as part of the line up it's a mistake come postseason. Also, they'd arguably get more value with one of Carerra/Pompey in RF and Bautista/EE splitting DH/1B.

    I just hope Estrada's back can hold up these 2 years, let alone a third. He's a pretty big concern right now.

    They have much bigger areas of concern than tying up more money at catcher. That might be your pipe dream but that's not reality. This whole concept isn't worth discussing.

    Martin is our starting catcher for the next 3 years, unfortunately 20MM says so. Making him a #2 would kill any potential future trade value in him. I understand what your thinking is but Thole is pretty much here as long as Dickey is which could still be another year or two.

    He has options, they can keep him in AAA rest of the year. I honestly don't think he's coming up unless he has a .400 BABIP in AAA lol.

    You realize Lucroy is arguably the best catcher in baseball (behind Posey) and you plan to have him as our back up catcher? I mean I know Thole sucks balls, but lol.
