But you can always add in money to a deal to make a trade more attractive to other teams. If you had that money saved from the backloaded deal you could use it to unload the player.
I think you are right in that a player would always prefer a front loaded deal if given the choice but I think now a days where the contracts are getting to be so big that some of it is union related. The Union wants the contract number to be as high as possible so maybe there is some leeway in getting the player to accept a backloaded deal or deferred money since the amount of money they are getting is so high in the first place.
With the day game tomorrow Saunders and Tulo were going to get 1 of the 2 days off. I'm amazed how some of you think all players should play everyday and not need days off.
Its like if I go buy furniture or a TV from Leon's and they give you the option of no payment or interest for 24 months. Even though I could afford it now its smarter to wait because the value of that money will be less in 2 years with inflation. I just have to be smart and not spend the money I allocated for that furniture for those 2 years.
Sure there is. Like I said to Gov. inflation makes the value of money decrease over time so if it was the exact same cost it makes sense to pay the money in 4 or 5 years where the value of say $20 million won't be as high.
You would need to have a good owner though who understands the strategy.
I don't see the problem with the contract. Rogers was the one set the budget, he did what he had to to fit him in the payroll structure. Plus if equal money its better to backload it since inflation decreases the value of it.
Martin has been one of the better framers this season? Top 5 among starting catchers. He's also been amazing at blocking balls in the dirt so far. Everyone knew those last couple of years at $20 million would be steep but do people forget we got a steal at $7 million last season?

Give him a week of games in Buffalo then bring him up to be the 4th OF. He's a horrible hitter but at least is a decent defender and baserunner which is what you want in a 4th OFer.
lol who is saying the season is over? Even if they get swept at home this next series they still have a good shot. They were a game below .500 when they made the big trades last year and took the division by 5 games.
On the bright side the Yankees and Red Sox both lost so its not like the Jays are in a huge rut to start the season. The Os have a big lead but I can't see that pitching staff keeping it together.
Jays are only 1 game below .500 which isn't that bad if you look around the league. I mean look at the Astros who are 5-11
I think the pen is fine if managed properly. One area that was supposed to be a big strength was the defense which has been worse than it should. Tulo and Pillar have been great (minus 1 Pillar play today) but everyone else seems to not be playing as well as they should.
I feel confident in it turning around though.
The ump was awful. Luckily it didn't effect the outcome of the game but it wasn't like calls didn't go against the Jays either. Bautista had a walk robbed of him earlier in the game too.
You don't agree that those players have looked great? The offence seems to haven't scored later than the 5th inning in a ton of games as well which hurts the Win/Loss record.
Bullpen has been fine. Cecil had horrilbe luck today. Add in:
-Osuna has been dominant
-Floyd and Chavez look really really good
And the pen looks to have 4 very good arms with Storen making it 5 if he can get on track. Pitching hasn't been close to the problem.
I brought this up when people were asking if tthe Jays should sign Bautista or Edwin long term. Even if the power comes back a month into the season like last year Edwin looks like he will fall off a cliff soon.
