  1. Wow. Lind knows more about restricting innings on young starters than AA does. I don't know if that's impressive or sad.
  2. "We tried, but when we saw Hutchison and Esmil Rogers against the Twins, we felt more comfortable with what we had". A reliable source confirming that Santana has signed with the Jays, only for him to sign with the Orioles, is so annoying and frustrating that it seems like a logical thing to happen to Blue Jays fans.
  3. Yeah, I have a bad feeling about this. The Orioles offer is very close and they have incentives. I'd make it $15M/1yr and see if Santana bites.
  4. Sign Santana and trade relief surplus for a 2B (unlikely) or a real platoon mate for Lind (more likely), and we're good to go. Still don't like Goins at 2B, but that's about the best the Jays could do at this point.
  5. Jon Morosi ‏@jonmorosi 55s In Jays camp today. No confirmation of an agreement with Ervin Santana. But some in the organization are optimistic about chances.
  6. I'm not even a Santana fan, but on a one year deal, there is no excuse not to sign him. He instantly improves the rotation and allows Stroman (and possibly Hutchison) to start the year in AAA. Make it happen.
  7. He is a bad GM for a number of reasons, that's just one of them.
  8. Hutchison and Stroman do not have innings limits? Yikes. I like how he mentions Marcum as someone who threw 200 IP after Tommy John Surgery yet doesn't mention that Marcum's performance completely eroded two years later. Whatever fits the narrative, I guess. AA is not a good GM.
  9. I honestly cannot express in words how upset I am that the Jays two biggest weaknesses, rotation and 2B, can easily be filled by signing Santana and Drew to short-term contracts, but the team refuses to spend additional money. I mean, it's right f'n there! Improve 2B and SP (probably could get both done on one year deals) and keep all your prospects. Why are the Jays so damn frustrating???
  10. With two rotation spots open and almost every single one of the 4/5 options struggling, it's going to be a s*** storm when Santana signs somewhere else. I'm already pissed off at AA/Beeston/Rogers and it hasn't even happened yet.
  11. Yep. Rogers does not want to spend a dime this off-season. This news will make them look incredibly cheap, especially when Santana signs a bargain for another team.
  12. Hopefully Romero is given a real shot at winning a rotation spot. Everyone else in contention looks like absolute crap this Spring (except for Hutchison....who should be in AAA anyway).
  13. 2009-11 Romero would completely change my opinion of the Jays rotation. No pressure, Ricky.
  14. I know. The Jays should have signed him though. I would have signed him and Bedard. Would have cost nothing and would have kept Hutch in the minors.
  15. Yep. I have a bad feeling they are risking Hutchison's health due to their cheapness this off-season. The guy was lacking pro innings before he got hurt. Now he comes back from surgery and they expect him to throw MLB innings right out of the gate? The Jays can't afford to go easy on him if he is in the Majors and everyone is fighting for their jobs. He'll be throwing 90-100 pitches a start against the best players in the world with a ton of pressure. I can't imagine a worse scenario for a rehabbing starter who, in any other organization, would be eased back in rather than thrown to the wolves. The sad part is, they didn't even need to sign Santana. Just sign freakin' Paul Maholm to eat up some innings and they could have put Hutchison in the minors and still had someone at the MLB level with a history of being able to get MLB hitters out.
  16. The minor league season is shorter and less demanding on the arm (i.e. Hutchison can work on his stuff without worrying about hurting the big league club). I think the Jays should have kept Hutchison and Stroman in AAA all of 2014, but since they are better options at #4-5 than anyone on the MLB roster, it's going to be hard to keep them down. That doesn't make it the best long-term move, though.
  17. Paul Maholm, Chris Capuano, and Erik Bedard combined will make less *guaranteed* money than Happ next season (not factoring incentives). Does that not bother anyone else? Playoff teams are signing equal or better pitchers than Happ for less money without even a guarantee of a rotation spot, while the Jays pencilled Happ into the rotation in December.
  18. Agreed. I hope they bite the bullet and sign Santana, and I'm not even a fan of his. The Jays need more 200 IP arms.
  19. Morrow staying healthy is more important than his ST results. He needs to actually make it to the regular season and stay healthy enough to throw 200 innings. It's a long shot, but Alex decided to bank his season on it, so he deserves whatever he gets.
  20. That 25 pounds of "muscle" Morrow added has sure helped him so far.
  21. Why didn't they increase payroll after 2010 when they won 85 games? Or after 2011 when they won 81 and with Darvish/Cespedes available? Why did they wait until after 2012 when they won 73 games and had as many injury and performance question marks as they did?
  22. Sure from a marketing standpoint it was a huge success, but the timing was always pretty bad. Practically everyone except for Encarnacion was coming off either a down year or a partial year due to injury. Hutchison and Drabek were to miss all of 2013. Their best prospects were in Double-A and below, so no help was on the horizon for at least a year or two. I understand they wanted to try to win with Bautista and Edwin, but the roster was not talented enough to go for it yet. Maybe if Lawrie had panned out, or Hutchison was healthy/effective, etc, but too many question marks and not enough certainty.
  23. When Arnsberg was here, everyone got injured too, but at least they pitched well before getting hurt. Practically everyone regressed last season save for Mark Buehrle, and every starter (healthy or injured) was giving up taters like it was 1998 again. I'm not saying it was entirely Walker's fault, but it happens with this organization all the time. Aaron Hill was terrible for two seasons here, then spends 45 seconds with Don Baylor and turns into a 5 WAR player overnight. This coaching team needs to be held accountable, especially if they wanted to scapegoat Chad Mottola (who appeared to actually do well with some players). Walker has no business being on this team after last year. Pitchers continue to regress under his watch.
  24. Rogers only knows how to do two things: 1) spend money at the absolute worst time and 2) when it doesn't work after a year or so start dumping contracts. Dickey is smart to put two and two together publicly. When Alex did nothing this off-season, the writing was on the wall. Rogers is bracing itself for another 75 win season to justify a firesale. If the team ends up winning instead, great, more money in their pocket, but don't expect ownership to help anymore.
