  1. The Indians should be asking for the moon. They will probably get close.
  2. 5 years for a reliever is scary.
  3. I shudder the thought of NOT having a good closer. It is demoralizing for a team to lose in the 9th, because the reliever could not close the game out. Now it would probably be prudent to trade Giles for a huge prospect, and sign a couple of veteran relievers with closing experience. Hudson for example. But we need somebody who can hold the lead in the 9th.
  4. At the 2019 trade deadline, Giles injury may have been a case of him NOT wanting to get traded. He may be 100% healthy. Who knows?
  5. I guess the question is WHY? Even if he can get MLB hitters out at a reasonable rate, which is unlikely, he is not going to have a big impact on the success of the 2020 team. Better to gain another year or two of experience in the minors, that way he does not get shell shocked at the MLB level. Don't start the clock ticking prematurely.
  6. They could sit around and have quiet discussions of the 2nd WW.
  7. Not sure why the dislike for Keuchel on this board. Last year, in a half season, he started 19 times, and 11 of those 19 starts he gave up either 0, 1 or 2 earned runs. If that would not make a difference on the Jays rotation I don't what would. Keuchel just goes out there year after year and gets the job done.
  8. Good signing. Can fit into multiple roles, from SP-Opener-late reliever. Has no affect on anything else the Jays choose to do. I would still like the FO to sign both Keuchel and Teheran and there is nothing here to stop those moves.
  9. 4/84 + an option year. Jeez we don't have to overbid by 30 million.
  10. The Indians pulled off a good trade. They picked up a good defensive centerfielder, and a potential future closer with 6 years of control. They dumped 15 mill off the books, which will allow them to sign a replacement for Kluber. Or go in another direction as desired. I cant see the Jays FO willing to part with a Clase quality prospect, to get a SP with questionable health issues.
  11. It would take more than Giles to get May. Dustin May has too much upside as a SP to trade even for 1 year of a top reliever. Including Eric Pardinho in with Giles would I'm sure get the Dodgers attention? In any case its going to take more than Giles.
  12. There is No Question that the Jays have the financial ability to do anything they want to do. Its a matter of WHAT they WANT to do? What they don't want to do is cripple future payroll ability by handing out stupid contacts, that could impact the ability to field a good team in the future. Right today, the jays could afford to pay Cole and Strasburg a combined salary of 80 million for next year. But what about 4 years from now, when you have our core entering arbitration years and collecting big salaries? I would be happy if we got Keuchel for 4/70 and Teheran for 3/30.
  13. Like I said, we had paid him the big money, we got 2 years of crap, then he finally gets his s*** together and bolts to the Yanks. So after all that, I was disappointed in his performance, and his loyalty. After 3 years we finally were getting what we had paid for. But JP had given him the optout, and from AJs point of view he was probably happy to get out of Toronto. As a Jays fan, at that time I wanted him to stay because we had finally experienced the potential. Frustrated with the inconsistency, but hopeful for the future. A bad overall experience.
  14. Heh Heh, I know that I'm old school, you guys who are looking back at the stat sheets and are telling yourselves what a great pitcher AJ Burnett was. When JP Ricciardi took over we thought that the Jays had finally gotten a real GM, best ever since the days of Gillick. The Jays had Doc producing at a great rate, but no closer. BJ Ryan was the best closer available, and JP signed him to great enthusiasm. Then all the talk came about AJ Burnett and his previous no hitter. JP signed him. Paid him more $$ than any pitcher in the previous 4 years. Unbelievable, Doc, BJ Ryan, and No Hit AJ Burnett. Jays fans were ecstatic, kind of like when Price came aboard. Only one problem. AJ was incredibly inconsistent those first 2 years. He would throw a shutout one start, get lit up for 5 runs the next. Then he would get hurt. Over and over, like Sanchez. Frustrating beyond belief. Burnett became the player to blame for the teams poor showing. He was paid the most $$. He had arrived with the most fanfare. He was expected to produce like Doc did. Jays won what 85 games. After 2 erratic seasons, he has a good one, and bolts to the Yanks. Thems the facts, like it or not??
  15. That was in 2006 dollars. I said Blue Jays history. Bill Caudill was also a huge disappointment.
  16. https://www.mlb.com/bluejays/news/blue-jays-signed-a-j-burnett-at-2005-meetings-c263084820 At the time, signing AJ was a huge deal to Toronto fans. It would be like us getting Cole now. The first 2 seasons, AJ was hurt regularly. Then he has a good 3rd season, and exercises his opt out clause, going to the Yanks. Major disappointment.
  17. No you wouldn't. A J Burnett was the biggest FA signing disappointment in the Jays history. He was hurt every time you turned around. He had one good year, his walk year.
  18. A.J. Burnett. Please don't remind me.
  19. Travis Shaw was cut loose. Could make a platoon partner with Rowdy.
  20. Villar traded to the Marlins for a 2019 14th round pitcher. Easton Lucas. Surely we could have got him.
  21. I would be OK with Maile starting the season as backup catcher. McGuire in AAA to start the season. When someone gets hurt, its nice to have 3 catchers. I know McGuire had a huge September, but it was a limited number of AB. 97.
  22. Every fan wants a winning team sooner, than later. If you can improve this team now, without screwing up the future, why not? The key is making sensible deals. Getting players of reasonable age with mid length contracts, or older vets on short term contracts. avoid the big $$ long term contracts that can cripple a team in the future.
  23. Yeh, waiving him never did make any sense. Might as well drag the decision out to the deadline and hope for a trade. It would obviously not take much if anything to get him.
  24. I guess it should be noted that Villar is still an Oriole up until Dec. 2nd, and can be traded up until that time. On Dec. 2nd if The Orioles have not tendered him a contract, then he becomes a free agent.
  25. With Cherington at the helm, Marte would have to be relatively easy to trade for. Put Marte and Villar in the batting lineup, then all of a sudden top FA pitchers are going to consider Toronto as being close to contenders. Teoscar and Orelvis Martinez should get Marte.
