  1. You mean some team like the Jays, that appreciate his ability to pitch regularly in long relief, works for $600G a year, and has 5 years of service time left?
  2. Why would you want to move Gaviglio? The guy does a good job at playing his position. Unlike several others who don't.
  3. Why would you say that Vlad is our best defensive 1B. Have you seen him play that position. Personally I like Rowdys hands at 1B.
  4. Jays would have to get 5 better guys thru ST, healthy??
  5. Imagine him coming into the bottom of the 9th, attempting to close the game out. He stares in at the batter, who erupts into a fit of laughter, and forfeits the game.
  6. I was at the final game in Detroit in 1987. Tanana won it 1-0 over Jimmy Key eliminating the Jays. I live 40 miles East of Detroit, and back then We had a huge rivalry with both them and the Indians. Now we hardly play either team. Its like it does not really matter what those teams do. However, now the Redsox/Yankee rivalry is even more intense. And it gives great satisfaction when we beat them. 2020 is going to be a fun year....
  7. Getting the pick for Smoak, and then signing Shaw for just $$, was a great move.
  8. Hudson still available. A 2/8mm may get him. Otherwise, the offseason is a long ways from over. I think we need a couple of good bullpen arms. I think we should hang on to Giles until there is a clear view of how the season progresses. We may be surprised.
  9. I seemed to have forgotten this as well.....https://www.upi.com/Archives/1985/02/20/The-Toronto-Blue-Jays-today-signed-pitcher-Bill-Caudill/7942477723600/
  10. Yeh your right. I forgot Gillick traded for him.
  11. Hey, Before I wrote my post I knew I would catch some flak. But I stand by my post. One of the first stats I look at when appraising a player is War. That's what jumped out at me, was how high Caudills War was. I think that this particular situation, was an example that it is not perfect. It does not always show REAL LIFE. It is however an extremely meaningful stat in the majority of cases.
  12. Yeh, I know how much you have been a fan of Bill Caudills over the years.
  13. What I,m saying is that you cant just look at WAR as the tell all about performance. Sometimes it is misleading.
  14. -0.3 was Caudill 1986 WAR. Still way too high.
  15. I observed that Ryu was the 1st Boras client signed by the Jays since Bill Caudill. Brought back distant memories. Back in 1984 the Jays were finally coming of age. They had a plus young lineup, Bell, Barfield, Moseby, Mullinex, Fernandez, Garcia, Upshaw, Whitt and top rung SP staff, Stieb, Alexander, Leal, Clancy, and Gott. But their relief core was terrible. They had a bunch of middle relievers, but nobody who could come in and shut the door in the 9th. So Gillick made the plunge into free agency and signed one of the supposedly top closers available. Bill Caudill had just come off a season with Oakland, and had 36 saves. Problem solved, right? 1985 season rolls out, and Caudill is a disaster. Total inconsistency in 9th. Save one game, lose one. Constant blown saves and losses. He gets reassigned as a middle reliever, and mop up guy. Comes in when game is NOT on the line. Gillick had however made a better move early in the season claiming Tom Henke from Texas as free agent compensation. By mid season Henke was up with the team and immediately became one of the top closers ever. So I look at Caudills and Henkes WAR for 1985. Caudill 1.0 war and Henke 1.1 war. How can that be? Two pitchers in MLB brought in to do the same job with same team, one an overwhelming success, and one an unmitigated disaster. I know most of you were not around back then, Spanky was, but here is a perfect example of how misleading WAR can be, when looking into past performances.
  16. Ryu may be smart to emigrate to Canada. Dangerous times on the peninsula.
  17. I think that with what the FO has accomplished this year, the rest of the MLB industry is going to take the Jays seriously. It will bode well for the team.
  18. He seems to be overmatched in the outfield. From my observations, he is going to have to improve dramatically to hold an OF job. He is not remotely close to a 4th OF, as most 4th OF can at least catch the ball. He shows some pop as evidenced by his HR ability, however time will tell if he can maintain that, and achieve a decent BA and OBP? At this time I am not impressed, and doubt he will become a starting MLB player. He just has too long of a ways to go, in too many areas.
  19. I could agree the Martin signing was OK. We got 1 very good season, 1 OK season, 2 mediocre seasons, and dumped him off before the 5th season. My biggest problem with signing the upper echelon players, is that you are forced to overpay for the majority of the contract. Granted this year the Jays have a surplus of money, so it is of no concern. But Martin was clogging the payroll, along with Tulo of coarse, in his later seasons. I want to reiterate that I am happy with this signing now, time will tell on the outcome.
  20. How many of them worked out?
  21. Obviously the key to this whole signing is going to be keeping Ryu healthy. I am not sure that there IS a way to ensure this, but I guess a strict pitch count will be a start.
  22. Yeh, you would think that haul would take all 6 of the Dodgers top 6 prospects?
  23. Wow, Great news to wake up to. I never thought we would make a deal with Boras. Maybe he has learned his lesson after last years Keuchel fiasco. Really need some relievers signed now. I can live with the rest. Hudson on a 2 year deal?
  24. I like the deal. The fact that he is left handed hitter like Rowdy, is immaterial as Rowdy has shown to hit LHP very well. I think he sees the ball better against lefties. With the 26 man roster, there is certainly room for EE as well, it would be good to have a power guy on the bench for pinch hitting, and injury replacement. There is a lot of upside to this deal, with no risk.
  25. Making it bigger sure doesn't help.
