If he doesn't beat him to the bag running he's definitely not going to beat him with the slide. Slide prevents momentum, doesn't get you there faster. Unless maybe you slide like Gose (superman slide).

You play shallow when it's the 9th inning and you need to eliminate base hits (i.e. XBH mean little unless the score is such that an XBH can tie or win the game).
