    My point is that it WASN'T historic. Which was the excuse given for copying the (illegal) dimension... It was a rhetorical question. It's a parking lot because it was just a generic stadium, not some sort of landmark that needed to be duplicated.

The only valid reason I could possibly think of is "there isn't enough space to build a stadium with these dimensions..." and even then, they'd have to have a great reason for not finding a different location. If old Yankee stadium was such a historic place, why is it a parking lot now?
