LANSING, Mich. - Fernery Ozuna tripled and homered in a 5-RBI performance, and the Kane County Cougars (11-20, 44-57) knocked off the Lansing Lugnuts (17-14, 53-48), 9-2, on Monday afternoon at Cooley Law School Stadium.
The Lugnuts finished 2016 interdivision play with an 11-13 record, 3-9 in the second half.
Kane County scored two runs in the third inning, three runs in the fifth, three in the eighth and one in the ninth to cruise to the win. All four Lansing pitchers allowed at least one run in the game, from starter Angel Perdomo to relievers Dan Lietz, Daniel Young and Ryan Cook.
Perdomo (Loss, 3-5) struck out six batters to move into sole possession of second place in the Midwest League with 115 strikeouts, though he also gave up four runs on five hits and four walks in four innings plus two batters into the fifth.
Ozuna followed with a three-run homer off incoming reliever Lietz, his third home run of the year.
Kane County starter Carlos Hernandez (Win, 5-7) struck out seven batters and walked five in 5 2/3 innings, allowing two hits and two runs (one earned).
Lansing's only runs were scored in the sixth inning: Ryan Hissey singled in John La Prise, and Connor Panas also came home on a fielding error by right fielder Joey Armstrong.
The game began oddly. Kane County loaded the bases with no outs in each of the first two innings against Perdomo, but failed to score any runs. Lansing countered by drawing three straight walks to open the second inning, but also came away scoreless.
In defeat, La Prise went 2-for-4 to lead the Lugnuts' offense, and Max Pentecost slugged his 12th double of the year.
Tuesday is a league-wide off day in the Midwest League before the Lugs begin a seven-game road trip to Bowling Green and Fort Wayne on Wednesday.
The next home game at Cooley Law School Stadium is a Winning Wednesday on August 3rd, opening a seven-game homestand. For more information or to purchase your tickets, call 517-485-4500 or visit lansinglugnuts.com.
