Why is it realistic to expect the worst case scenarios on every player? I agree with everything you said about each situation as being possible, but there's also the other side of the each coin. In no way am I sitting here saying every situation will be the best case, but To think that every single thing that you mentioned will happen is just blind pessimism without a base in reality.

Something did go wrong if Goins is left to play and ends up a below average player. The decision making in the FO would have went horribly wrong.

Can't sell 'em all, nor should you. Also consider the changing landscape of baseball and teams realizing how much value young players have, trades of key pieces don't quite get the same returns these days, unless you're trading with Alex or Dayton Moore.

It's technically not language against a qualifying offer, it just means that Philly won't ever have the option to offer one for next season based on the mutual/player option. If Selig saw language that specifically said a QO couldn't be offered, he would nix the contract. This is just a creative way around it

Basically, he's not retiring, so the Red Sox can place him on the restricted list rather than the DL, meaning they don't have to pay him this year. He was on MLB network radio today and he explained that his neck is really f***ing with him right now, so he knew he couldn't start and rather than maybe be effective as a reliever, he went this route to give it a full year to heal

Minor league deal with invite to spring training. Would be a great guy coming off the bench as a pinch runner, multiple defensive uses. Used correctly, would probably be a positive asset.

Nice bail out by the refs there for Atlanta... Should be a 3 point game but they hand Atlanta 2 free throws on a brutal call I guess the plus here is that was one of the worst quarters I've seen this year and they're only down by 5. Problem is, the second unit is going to be in the game and they can't score for s*** right now.

Agreed. As much he was an overrated defender, he was one of the best with the bat at the position in history. Should be first ballot Hall of Famer -
He's okay defensively but you don't even need to defend him, he's option 8 on offense with only 5 guys on the floor. The problem with Hansborough is usually fouls, he's so aggressive that he inevitably picks up more than his share and can't stay on the floor for long. He was good tonight though.

Also, think of the additional value Miggy would provide if he wasn't the third worst defender at 3b last year, ahead of only Michael Young and David Freese.

Money in the game is shifting. Look at Freeman's extension and recent pitcher deals for arms that aren't even front or even mid rotation guys. These guys are enjoying the money flowing into the game from these regional tv deals, and the costs of signing even moderate talent is going up. This scares the hell out of me for the Jays since it's very clear AA is not interested in paying those kinds of prices to try and improve the team and recent history is showing that the talent development system is really suspect. Combine those two factors and the future looks pretty grim. You can't trade for everyone Alex and your farm system isn't good enough to make up for ignoring the free agent market as a way of acquiring talent. Sure, every year there will some guys out there that turn out to be bargains for a variety of reasons, but even then, there's no reason to think AA has eyes on these guys and even if he does... Waiting them all out isn't a viable strategy that will pay off every year. -
As son as they can find a way to tweak the system to benefit the big spending teams like the Yankees. And before people start with the "conspiracy" crap, just think about all the recent changes to the system and the types of teams it has helped.
