It's all well and good to say that, but the fact is that with catching prospects, because of their skill sets, most of them can't slide down the spectrum like other players. If a normal SS can't handle the position but can swing the bat, no problem, slide him to 2B or 3B. Their value isn't entirely dependent on their position. If a 2B or 3B can't handle that position but can hit the ball, slide them to CF. And then to a corner... and then to 1B. If a catcher can't handle the position but he can swing the bat, for most catchers, he better be able to swing the bat like a motherf***er because all of a sudden he's a f***ing first baseman where a guy like Miguel Cabrera can be the f***ing 5th best hitter at the position in any given year. Catchers who can play anything other than C or 1B are a rare breed. Maybe Pentecost can do that, Carlos Santana is an example, but it's very unlikely.

I think it's pretty clear that Spanky gets more bankable value in the Melky deal. I get more upside with Moore but the guy has been a thoroughly pedestrian big leaguer and a big K/BB drag through a fair number of career innings. + he's coming off the TJS. If he can find a way to even sniff his minor league peripherals though...

Yeah we were talking about Melky for a week or two, I just wasn't overly keen on the idea of dealing him for no MLB players. I think it's possible that Spanky's willingness to assign some value to Rollins was influenced a bit by me saying that he was close competing if he could upgrade his offense by a couple if pieces, including a SS. At then end up the day Rollins should be a decent upgrade for him at the position for 2015 though.

Pretty sure this has never happened. Link if I'm wrong. My impression from around the draft was that Pentecost was intriguing because he was a good bet to stick at catcher and be a 50 or 60 grade hitter. So his value seems to very much be tied to whether or not he's a catcher. I was thinking that if he develops, maybe you get something like a Yadier Molina (with 50 grade defense instead of 70). Say, AJ Pierzynski with a league average walk rate.

Hmmm. See I'm more concerned about Votto because he's had that hamstring issue a few times, so it might be chronic. Tulo's injuries have been more random. I think they are a consequence of a big body like his playing shortstop every freaking day, but I don't think there is a substantially troubling underlying issue.

How could you argue that Votto is better than Tulo? I just fail to see any angle on that one.

You probably just have more of a 3B skill set. I bet you have decent reflexes and a good arm, but you're probably not as dexterous or nimble on your feet as good second basemen. If 2B was harder than 3B, then at the MLB level you would expect second basemen sliding to third to post markedly better UZR's. I don't think they do!

If you were packaging Votto, then it pretty much had to be Tulo. That or some player who hasn't been floated at all, but that's pretty unlikely considering there would only be like, 10 names.
