This is a perfect example on how you guys view players as "non human", and just go by numbers, whether the 600 PA were derived in one season,or over the course of three to four seasons. For anyone who has personally been in a competitive on the fence type atmosphere like Goins or Pillar and similar types, then you would no how it feels to feel the pressure to perform in a small window of time or else get demoted. Of any professional sport, baseball is by far the worst sport to play in these types of conditions. Before Goins was called up for the first time, you all were speculative regarding his defense, even though there were several posters here that claimed he was a superior defender at SS and 2B based on what we witnessed at Bisons' games. Board "this doesn't mean he'll perform well defensively in the MLB" What? Why? Because the ball parks in the bigs play different? I'm just making this point because it was f***ing ludicrous to make such a statement, and because some projection on fangraphs says so.
Now i know Goins will probably never hit well enough to land a starting gig in the show (barring an injury), but i see enough in his swing that can possibly change that. I can honestly see him,if given a guaranteed amount of playing time, hit in the .250 / .300 / .390 range, but that's JMO. If so, combined with his defense, would a viable middle infield option if the team he plays for has a lot of offense in the line up. You may think i sound old fashioned for saying this but, defense is a really important thing, especially up the middle. There are many intangibles that don't show up in advanced metrics, such as pitch count saved, thus improving the pitcher's mind set for example.
I'm not denying this Japanese kid can play, but his arm in the bigs can only play at 2B, otherwise he's a below average defender. He's not throwing out speedy left handed hitters from the whole at SS in the bigs, and not many fast RHB either. He's a defensive liability at SS, regardless of his glove. He may be able to get away with playing 3B in short spurts if needed, but not much else except 2B.
I'd rather roll the dice with Izturis/Goins at 2B for a few months and hope Travis plays well enough in Buffalo and gets called up. Use the $4mil per on RP or another decent outfield bench option with speed.
