  1. I'd be very surprised if he starts against us tonight, it's too risky for the Pads.
  2. Defense and defensive stats are so variable, I wouldn't be comfortable going that far. 70, sure. It's definitely well above average. And are you strictly talking about his range (which is great), or his total defensive package? Because his arm is average at best.
  3. Is Pillar's defense as elite as Stanton's power? Chapman's fastball? Hamilton's speed? Trout's hitting? I don't think so.
  4. They're both terrible defensively, I'd just play whoever's healthier at the moment lol.
  5. Yeah... but maybe not totally. His K and BB rates are right in line with his career numbers... if you squint, maybe his HR regresses and he's something like his career 3.75 ERA/FIP/xFIP. There was also talk that they want him as a reliever, so there's that. Just playing devil's advocate, but he has posted 3 straight 2.3+ WAR seasons coming into 2016. If the cost is cheap, I wouldn't mind taking a shot on him.
  6. Should have taken Groome or Puk, boo
  7. It's also apparently the most expensive thing to upgrade.
  8. Padres prospect right-hander Chris Paddack is dealing with a strain in his elbow/forearm area. Paddack, who was recently acquired from the Marlins in the Fernando Rodney deal, was pulled after suffering the injury during his warm-up pitches Monday at Low-A Fort Wayne. He'll be looked at by a doctor in the coming days.
  9. D-Jake is untouchable and you know it.
  10. There are many ways to improve our WAR projections, I'm sure Atkins is exploring all of them. As nox would say, you're narrowly framing the problem. A 1 WAR upgrade at 1B or OF is the same as a 1 WAR upgrade in the rotation.
  11. Yikes, if the Padres are trying to sell Cashner, running him out there against an incredibly stacked Jays lineup at the Rogers Centre probably isn't the best way to showcase his value.
  12. We don't need pitching, we just need WAR. Pillar is going nowhere.
  13. Delete your account and start over.
  14. Just like Pat Tabler says "pitching and defense win championship!" ... even though, very literally, you need to score runs to win championships.
  15. Lol... the Rays made it to the playoffs 3 out of his 5 full years, including a WS appearance, and over those 5 years he averaged 4 WAR. Olbermann has gone full tard if that's a legit tweet.
  16. There's so much derp with this tweet... where to even begin.
  17. I don't think he has a leg to stand on. He knows damn well that his shoulder is f***ed up and he hasn't been able to throw a ball with zip since last year (the Delmon Young spite throw incident). On top of that, his range was in steep decline even before turf toe.
  18. I think this is exactly what we're looking at. It's not going to be a straight platoon, Upton will get the bulk of time and Smoak will be a late inning defensive replacement for EE, give him the odd day off, and be a PH when we could benefit most from a lucky HR.
  19. I don't think that's a statement you can definitively make; you of all people should know how long splits take to stabilize. Looking at either of their weak hand splits over the last 2 seasons or w/e doesn't really tell us much of anything. Any way you slice it, Smoak is at best a league average hitter on his better half, while we're playing pylons in LF and RF every night.
  20. Also, I love how Jonah Keri goes out of his way during every interview to tear apart the myth of Bautista's defensive adequacy. Dropping truthbombs all over. At least someone has the sack to say it on the air.
  21. Career splits Upton 110 wRC+ vs LHP, 95 vs RHP Smoak 101 wRC+ vs RHP, 85 vs LHP 6 point career wRC+ gap on that platoon... meh. Keeping Bautista out of the outfield is far more meaningful IMO.
  22. Those splits don't mean much, and Saunders and Bautista are brutal defensively.
  23. If you can't spell "to" properly, no wonder you can't read a poster's name.
  24. Sorry, that gif was already used in this thread.
