  1. if there is a fielding error its still a single, but the runner is now on 2nd or 3rd..... so a single is always in every circumstance more valuable than a walk
  2. JPA is one of the top 10 worst players in MLB, and a prime reason the Jays are cellar dwellers.... the evidence is overwhelming.... he has easily on his own resulted in a dozen losses
  3. then its the same value. the batter doesn't necessarily see more pitches when they walk
  4. no because the single (ball in play) introduces the chance of a fielding error and the runner ending up on 2nd or 3rd
  5. walks are controversial because the value depends on the situation walking the #9 slap hitter with no one out has value very close to a single, while walking EE with men on 2nd and 3rd with 1 out and JPA on deck may very well have negative value when it comes to the team I watch, the jays, the walks, many going to Bats and EE, seem to be of low value Edit - just read BTS's post above, he is wrong the value of a walk is not static
  6. as reported by Gruber who was at the game don't forget the two strikeouts...... Gruber do you remember if these were swing and miss K's Pillar may just be a natural hitter, a guy with uncanny hand eye coordination and that plays at any level. we will see
  7. sure. my comment was simply to counterbalance yours which as written implied there is no downside to a walk. there can be significant downside to a walk which is why an intentional base on balls is worth about 25% of a single
  8. hey 22 yrs as a professional engineer, I have no illusions
  9. sure but walking also increases the chances of a double play, and the chances are EE is the one that walked, and JPA is the next batter, meaning double play or K, take your pick
  10. is this based on a closed form solution?
  11. seems high to me, a single will drive in anyone on 3rd and most of the time anyone on 2nd, a walk sends a runner home only if the bases are full I would peg a walk at somewhere around 58.6% of a single
  12. f***ing chaos move lawrie to 2B and leave JPA behind the plate.... ummmm.....
  13. a bit of a fallacy there, teams that are winning send more batter to the plate, have more opportunity to get walks its not a direct correlation
  14. to be sure, Bautista would be more valuable to the team if he would be more aggressive at the plate i'd rather see him hitting .265 and OBP'ing .330 than .250 and .360 more XBH and less clogging up the basepaths, lol
  15. Hech easily but has nothing to do with batting average. He has better makeup (lol), years of control, better defense.
  16. Hech's batting stats are roughly identical to Izturis, are trending in the right direction, and come with gold glove defense. And he's young.
  17. TJS actually strengthening the arm may also have something to do with it
  18. Racist is a term applied to those that discriminate. It's not correct to think of distinct races any longer. The term used is not race but ethnic background. If you insist on using the term 'race', what race are Arabs? White or black or?
  19. Davis can walk Gose can replace him
  20. Frankly, if there was ever a team that should be active at the trade deadline, the Jays are it. They've got many pieces buyers would covet, and holes to fill. Come on AA, make some moves. It will breathe some life into the team and the fanbase!
  21. The team seems cursed. Hate watching Lind, JPA, Bautista, Dickey, JJ, Bonifacio, Izturis, Melky, even Lawrie FFS Like watching EE, Rogers, McGowan, Rasmus The rest I'm ambivalent about In other words, the reasons not to watch outweigh the reasons to watch
  22. Let's not hit the panic button... might give AA ideas
