  1. Japan Times: - NPB, MLB to reopen posting system talks KYODO NOV 18, 2013 Nippon Professional Baseball will reopen talks with Major League Baseball over a new bidding system for Japan by no later than Tuesday after MLB pulled its proposal last week. Representatives from the 12 teams in Japan met on Monday, when they were told by NPB negotiators that they will strive to maintain a system somewhat resembling the existing one. “We will negotiate to try to keep what we have,” NPB’s general secretary Atsushi Ihara said. “We have to go over a timetable with them.” On Thursday, MLB said it withdrew the proposal that was on the table, arguing the Japanese took too long to act on striking a new agreement. Under the previous deal which has expired, Japanese players wanting to play in the majors who are not free agents had to be put up for a blind bid to MLB’s 30 teams. The highest bidder had an exclusive negotiating window of 30 days to sign the player. If no agreement could be struck, the player was sent back to his Japanese team. MLB’s new proposal had set the winning fee at a figure in between the two highest bids, and if a club failed to sign the player, it would be subject to a fine. The Japanese players association relented over the proposal after initially balking at the idea, saying it offered little for NPB, its club or the players.
  2. New stuff today: - MLB, NPB Re-Opening Posting System Talks By Steve Adams [November 19 at 12:20am CST] NOVEMBER 19: Major League Baseball and Nippon Professional Baseball will restart talks about a new posting system as early as today, according to a Japan Times report. NPB negotiators hope to reach a new agreement "somewhat resembling the existing one."
  3. Did
  4. Sadly, it's a weak year for free agent starters.
  5. My point is, they cheap out (trade for Hanigan, play goins at 2B, sign a third tier ASAP to a minor league contract) they're doomed. He needs to buy a 5 win upgrade somewhere. It could be catcher (McCann), 2B (Cano) or SP (not sure who qualifies there but let's say Tanaka or Garza are most likely to provide extra wins).
  6. A) Sign Tanaka or Garza, sign Ruiz or Pierz and roll the dice at 2B Sign Cano and Jiminez, trade for a C C) Sign McCann and a decent C, trade for league average 2B
  7. Dis the new thread if you want but... Having though through every scenario with people in here it feels to me like he has no choice Trading Bautista leaves a big hole Trading Stroman and Sanchez feels so wrong Trading BP pieces won't get us all we need If he wants this team to be competitive in 2014, and save his job, and save the farm from desolation he has to beg Rogers for the $ to land a big fish. He doesn't have the means to fix this team any other way. Tanaka Garza Cano McCann Then he can fill a second hole by trade. But without landing one of the impact FA players I just don't think anything else will be enough. If he doesn't, either: The team won't be good enough We leave too much to chance in terms of the starting rotation We destroy what's left of the farm Agree or disagree?? How desperate is AA? Will Rogers let him increase payroll to 160-170 to mad out the return on what they've already invested and really go for it?
  8. Dammit I wish I had MLB radio
  9. Blah blah. They're obviously not signing Cano. LOL #InfieldGlut
  10. Yeah I loves me some Colby but he's a 3 tool player. Bad arm and average speed.
  11. That's pretty much the meat of the Dominican national team batting order right there. Damn that's some hitting.
  12. You just have to assume such players are going to turn in to draft picks if you trade for them or already have them.
  13. Yep. Same goes for Scherzer. No one is going to trade a top 20 prospect for 1 year of him at 13-14M to have him walk to the highest bidder next December.
  14. First, welcome to the board Agree the salary implications are the main problem here for STL in this instance but I appreciate how well thought out it is
  15. Baseball Hot Corner (?) on all the reasons the Blue Jays should sign this guy: http://baseballhotcorner.com/toronto-blue-jays-need-sign-masahiro-tanaka/
  16. In what team's farm system?
  17. He has one more season before you do that.
  18. Accidentally clicked on my bookmark for the old board. Laughed out Lind at the crap threads and posters who started them. Check out the first 5 or so titles. I advice not going to read them cause... Well just because they're complete crap.
  19. Sucks. The prospect of signing a 25 year old pitcher who projects as probably a solid #2 starter, for just money, no prospects and no draft pick loss is certainly appealing to this team right now.
  20. Yeah this thing is just all over the place. And should have been finalized before the WS and Japanese championship were done.
  21. Some inside scoop from the NY Times about the meetings between MLB and Nippon league: http://www.nytimes.com/2013/11/15/sports/baseball/dispute-jeopardizes-new-posting-system-for-japanese-players.html?ref=sports&_r=0
  22. I'd bet he has 5-6 teams willing to offer 1 year around 6-8M, none offering 2 years at double that, and he just picks where he wants to play.
  23. This is pretty cool. 1965 TV broadcast, the last 3 innings, in color, of Jim Maloney's 10 inning no hitter at Wrigley field. Baseball history buffs (Georgia Peach especially) enjoy! http://deadspin.com/never-before-seen-color-footage-of-1965-baseball-1465241550
  24. Job security. So he doesn't have to keep proving himself. So that if he has a mediocre 2014 it won't burn him.
