  1. If Headley's BABIP was where it should be he'd be close to a league-average hitter. And his defense is good enough that he can survive on a 90 wRC+ anyway. He's a clear upgrade. Nobody said he was perfect.
  2. You have to remember where he's playing though. In 2013 he was very valuable player despite stats that look mediocre on the surface. His career line is fairly impressive. He's a plus defender with a league-average bat playing a position of need. All it will likely take is a financial commitment and a token prospect. I don't understand how anyone can be against this.
  3. Hopefully this Headley thing really is close. He's exactly what we need. A switch-hitting infield stopgap for what I assume would be a modest price. Do you want to improve the team or not? IMO it's unlikely that the Padres get much more than salary relief.
  4. Norris could be in the rotation full-time by the start of next year. It would be foolish to move him for that reason. With this team running into a payroll wall, having productive players who make the minimum is huge. Norris is more than just an asset who will pay off many years into the future. Look at Stroman. You still hear people throwing him into trade packages for Price. He's one of the most valuable players on the roster!
  5. I think it's more that they just can't be bothered. They do the same thing to their swing every day in batting practice.
  6. Both. The Mets don't want to trade away their face of the franchise and don't think the trade lines up with their timeline. The Blue Jays see Wright as a downgrade from Bautista and don't want to take on his contract.
  7. What is that supposed to mean? How Janssen performed in this game has nothing to do with his production going forward.
  8. The lack of depth on this roster is really showing. Cause for legitimate concern.
  9. I'll bite. Those things have nothing to do with Brandon McCarthy and what his ERA says about him.
  10. I haven't made fun of anyone. Tell me how xFIP is wrong about Brandon McCarthy.
  11. I don't care if they openly say ERA is all that matters or not. They are clearly basing their entire opinion of McCarthy on his ERA (and perhaps W-L). Consciously or not, it's happening. If he had a 3.00 ERA but looked exactly the same when those people watched him and he had the exact same peripherals, the non-stats crowd would be all over him and would be pissed that the Yankees acquired him so cheaply.
  12. But the only thing the non-stats crowd is doing here is putting all their stock in ERA. ERA misses much more relevant information that xFIP does.
  13. Napoli! Red Sox - Orioles is tied. Boston with two huge two-out singles.
  14. I don't have an argument in this string of posts! Was just pointing out that McCarthy has been very good in the first half. Yeah it's a semantics thing. He's a step below those guys for sure.
  15. Nice! I like this.
  16. McCarthy probably is not one of the best pitchers in baseball going forward, but there's no denying he has been to date. Santosesque peripherals.
  17. No it seems like Votto knew he had a day off so he came late.
  18. Votto was late getting to the ballpark and usually keeps an empty locker... lol
  19. A pitcher can't control what happens on balls in play. His average against and WHIP are not his fault. All a pitcher can do is strike batters out, prevent walks and get ground balls. McCarthy has been very good at doing each of those three things. He is a very good pitcher. At least you agree it makes sense for the Yankees.
  20. McCarthy has been above-average this year and will likely continue to be. But even if you say he's only average, isn't that still an upgrade over Nuno (who is decidedly below-average)? It's a clear upgrade!
  21. Why can't the Yankees "make another move?" Is there a rule that prevents teams from making multiple moves? It's not like they cleared out their farm with this trade. McCarthy is a good pitcher and the Yankees gave up nothing to get him. It's a clear upgrade. There's no way to be happy about this from a Jays perspective.
  22. McCarthy would be our #2 starter after Stroman. He strikes guys out, doesn't walk anyone and gets a ton of groundballs. That combination is simply not going to continue to be ineffective. Brandon McCarthy is really really good and this trade could change the balance of power in the AL East.
