  1. no one wants to talk to someone who is perceived as intentionally wasting their time. if a GM is always asking too much or never willing to put a deal on the table that he is going to make, other GMs will just stop taking their calls. then you have the fact that many America players have misguided ideas of how things work in Canada. add those 2 together and you get a leper colony who no one will acknowledge. cant attrack FA and no GM wants to deal with us. it's a bright future. lol
  2. I'd like to have both. bring Stroman up whenever one of the starters falls apart. not caring about order... Tanaka Dickey Buehrle Morrow McGowan... Add stroman when either McGowan or Morrow's arm falls off. Happ as long man and depth. then they have Hutch coming back and hopefully taking up the slack when the second of the two glass men goes down. and yes, I think Stroman is worth more than the 20M.
  3. his articles generally go in the "stupid is as stupid does" category, but they can be funny to read.
  4. the 20M is less than trading Stroman or any other top prospect. the rest is simply contract and if they can get him for under 20M per year max 5 year, then they should do it. it fits this window and they can always sell him 3 years from now for a good price if they decide to rebuild.... it's not going to be a bad investment as long as it stays under 120M total for 5 years. with inflation and value of wins increasing it would be less than Darvish and probably about where it should be.
  5. if the Ms have any money left after the Cano deal... they will be another option. if the jays had only missed the playoffs by a couple games last year they might have been able to lure him in the promise of being a winning team, but that ship has sailed and I dont think it's due back in port for a while.
  6. it will be interesting to see how long of a contract Tanaka wants. if he comes over and is amazing like darvish, he'll want 4 years and then be a FA again to net a ridiculous deal... or will he go the safe route and sign for 6 right away?
  7. exactly... the change is all plus for the player and the american team that signs him. minus for the japanese team. I think they would have got a lot more than 20M in a blind big.
  8. the audience for today's game was about 1/4 canadian fans. lol
  9. the bidding is already gone. it's a set fee of 20M. then it's up to the teams to blow the guy until he decides who to play for.
  10. MLB have an agreement in place with the Japanese league that says they wont rape Japanese. the Japanese team put a lot of time and energy into developing young players. it's only fair they get value from their investment. since MLBPA would never let players be traded to japan and the players would never go there if they still had a career, they have to have a post fee so the Japanese teams get return on their investment. in north america teams just trade assets. players can be FA in Japan and come to the USA if they play out their entire draft contract with their home team. the Japanese just try to get value out of players they know are going anyways. the new idea of a fixed posting fee is interesting. not as good for the Japanese teams for sure. a lot better for the Japanese players coming to the USA. Player has full right to pick from any team who puts up a bid of 20M. 8 to 21 teams will be in with a shout, but it's going to have to be a huge contract. final cost wont be any different from Darvish deal, but the player will get a bigger piece and the Japanese team gets about 30M less. not sure why Nippon agreed to this.
  11. yes, because taking away any good player japan has, because their league has less money, is the right thing to do.
  12. Liverpool’s Luis Suarez Has A £130m Release Clause In His New Reds Contract
  13. add in the south american leagues to that as well. top tier and top money spending leagues in Europe. Spain England German French Russian Italian second tier Portuguese Ukraine Dutch
  14. actually a lot of players have buyout clauses. the difference being that players who dont excel will never have their buyout clause used, so we dont hear about them, but it is fairly common. players can have clauses in their contract that say they can ask for a transfer if their team doesn't make it to the Champions league even. it is very different from how business is done in North America. teams will negotiate the transfer fee when the player's contract is close to running out. IE: 2 years left. A player who only has a year left on their contract is considered of lesser value in the transfer fee because the team with the short contract is seen as being in a position to take it now or not get any return. it's not often that a top player becomes a FA. it's also fairly common for teams to come to terms with the player and void a contract and give the player a bigger and longer one to keep top players on their side. so if a player has a 2 year deal making 200,000 dollars a week, a team might come back and offer them a change to a 5 year deal at 300,000+ per week.
  15. I really want to go back to Bali. it was absolutely amazing. Swedish fans are not as into Hockey as Canadian fans are. sure there is a core of fans, but not like in Canada. Canadian fans travel well. Göteborg is better for me. it's only a 40 minute drive, but it will likely be 10-12 years before they have the juniors again.
  16. I've been really busy since baseball season ended. completely missed that. any team who can hang out a very good deal can pick him up. this is a lot better deal for the player and the agent. lol it's more like European soccer. most players have a buy out clause in their contract. it's usually some ridiculous sum, but at least you know the price. there are players that have 70 million dollar transfer fee buyout clauses. Gareth Bale, this last summer, went from Tottenham to real mardid and the transfer fee was 121 million dollars. D-O-L-L-A-R-S Plus his six year 521 thousand a week... (27M/yr)contract. and people think baseball is expensive.
  17. Malmö is almost 6 hours away... I spent all my money going to Singapore and Bali. lol I'm just happy the games are on at a time that is more manageable for me. only 10 hours and 45 minutes until the Germany Canada game. love the juniors!!! I watch every year. My team canada jersey is clean and ready to go.
  18. very interesting. it's not longer a blind bid, but instead a set price and then the player can negotiate between the teams he wants to play for. http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article/mlb/report-masahiro-tanaka-hires-agent-as-posting-set-to-begin-thursday?content_id=66192560&partnerId=as_mlb_20131226_16290844&vkey=news_mlb&ymd=20131224
  19. sorry for your loss.... I have one kid in Japan and one in the Canary islands. you just have to remember that christmas is just one of 365 days- make sure you take advantage of other days. we'll do our christmas in January. it really doesn't matter when you get together, just that you make sure it's good when you do.
  20. two looneys, 3 quarters and a wad of lint from AA's pocket. he blew his budget last year and is too gun shy to go to Rogers for more money.
  21. nice...
  22. spending 105-120M and not having to give up any prospects is not the worst thing that could happen this off season. it's a crap shoot, but so is any trade you make and trades cost assets you never get back. you can make more money
  23. that's if they have things fall their way and dont have any injuries or career dips. I dont us winning 85 with the team without adding a quality starter and a solid stick. last year AA couldn't get any FA to come so he made trades that really didn't make sense. looks like he still can woo any FA. we'll have to hope he doesn't do anything long term stupid just to try to save his ass.
  24. I know there are some pundits who blow rainbows out of a unicorn's ass with prospect projection and use projection to "subjectively" rank the prospects. when it comes to the jays, the more time a player has to spend in the minors, the greater the chance they get screwed up. If we had the Rays farm system I would put more stock in long distance projections. Jays system washes out more ball players than any of us want to know about.
  25. top prospect is not the player in the system with the highest potential ceiling. it is the the player who is closest to being a top impact player in the Major league team. Stroman could walk onto the mound the first game of the year and be one of the teams best starters. Sanchez is probably 2 years away. come on peeps....be real
