Yeah, he's gonna need a 6-win season to get anything close to that, I think. Because if you're going to drop a massive pile of cash on a player, would you pick Tucker or Vlad? I'd go with Tucker, frankly. -

Yep, something is still happening but it's weird none of the other sites are suffering. I've sent another note to our server tech about it.

Anyone else seeing this message? We restarted some server instances, which fixed some slowness on the other sites but it seems to be lingering here.

I like the comp to Freeman for Vlad. It's a much better comparison than Acuna, Albies, etc. And I think it's often overlooked that both Vlad and Bichette come from generational wealth. That surely gives them a perspective and patience that most other players, particularly Latin players, can't afford to have.

I only know the salary of one person at The Athletic and it's a lot more than $50k a year. I'd say closer to double that. Not a fortune by any means but a good salary. Though I have no idea if that's average, below average, or above average within the company.

Great piece, Jim! From a pure baseball standpoint, strikeouts aren't a big deal but they suck from a spectator viewpoint, which is why people throw such a fit about them (and conflate them as a terrible baseball outcome). -

Well that's funny. My first Twins board had a beef with Aaron Gleeman (now Twins beat for The Athletic), though we buried that hatchet ages ago. I don't even know how it started, Gleeman is a really good writer, some of the board users just liked to harass him for whatever reason.

I'm just curious what Jays fans think of him and his writing. I know he has moved publications a few times and is currently out on his own with The Batflip. With most of you being more on the analytical side of things, curious to hear your thoughts on him.

Oh absolutely, it's on our list of things to figure out. Daily minor league recaps are A GRIND and it requires a group of fanatical nerds to produce them for six months. That group of fanatical nerds is hard to find and put together but we're brainstorming ways to streamline that process a bit. One of our core missions is to provide daily minor league coverage. It only appeals to the hardest of hardcore fans but hardly anybody provides that coverage (because it's hard). I don't know if we'll get there in the 2025 season but we're gonna try to get the ball rolling on it. This is a good point. If you know a thread is going to piss people off, don't be surprised when it does exactly that. One aspect posters often overlook is the "beating the dead horse" aspect of a conversation and this applies to almost everybody at one point or another. If you're a staunch supporter/hater of literally anybody involved with the team, the more you repeat those same points across the site, the more people get irritated and punch back. Everybody knows how you feel, everybody knows your position. At some point, it's best to just talk about other things for awhile. This only magnifies if you drag that pet peeve into every topic you post or create additional threads about it. Take a breath before hitting that submit button and think "have I already made this point a bunch of times in the past few days?"

People were thumbs downing people largely for who they were, not the content. If people are going to aggravate one another with a reaction, I'm just gonna remove it. I have a task list a mile long, hearing people complain about reactions just isn't something I'm interested in dealing with. -
Would they have been fired under a "usual situation"? I don't think that's true. And to be clear, if I had the reins I probably would have fired both of them. To come out of that young core with no playoff success, no long-term players, and a bottom third farm system is... not good. But front offices tend to get longer leashes than fans like. When dealing with a decision as important as who runs your billion-dollar business, not making rash decisions makes sense and giving guys a little too long a leash is going to happen.

Sure, and that’s a normal way to feel. But it’s not how teams operate. Ownership will either fire them during the offseason or keep them through the season. It’s just how these things work most of the time.
